gdb prompt never returns from 'r' command:

mark@ubuntu:~/hello$ cat hello.c

#include <stdio.h>

int main()
{
        printf("Hello, world.\n");
}

mark@ubuntu:~/hello$ cc -g hello.c

mark@ubuntu:~/hello$ gdb --quiet a.out

Reading symbols from a.out...
(gdb) r

Notes:
Fresh install of Ubuntu
Two upgrades added (apt-get): 'build-essential', 'gdb'
No other changes to installation
lldb attaches and runs normally
