It's true that wchar_t is used in places, but the output of the iconv system which has been requested to be INTERMEDIATE_ENCODING specifically does not seem to be used for anything except converting again later. So I don't think that changing INTERMEDIATE_ENCODING will cause any issues - even if it isn't what the host thinks wchar_t should be. This was my thought. Usually on windows/mac you build for the earliest version you want support and then expect that to still run on later versions of the system.
