I haven't changed anything with configuring in the opcodes
directory. I see the same error as you when I configure for
"z8k-coff", but configuring for "z8k-anything-coff" works fine.

I thought the configure targets are triples, so z8k-coff shouldn't be
valid anyway?

Most embedded toolchains use doubles, since there is no one specific
system that they are targeted towards.

Many target duples work.  "./config.sub <target>" to see what happens.
Read the start of config.sub to see where you should send patches, should
you desire to make "z8k-coff" work.

I tried gdb 5.0 and it compiled (at least).

Since I haven't used gdb in this way before, please let me ask
whether I used it correctly:

I created a z8k coff executable "hello".
Start z8k gdb
"target sim"
"load hello"
"run"

-> gdb segfaults

So it looks broken :-(

My binutils assignment isn't finished yet, I will try to fix binutils
first (which with my patches seem to work quite well for me).
Later I might look into gdb then (if time permits etc..)

Since src/opcodes is shared with GDB, your changes will fix this part of
GDB as well.

For GDB 5.1, I'll document the z8k as broken.  If the build problems get
resolved, let the GDB group know (gdb@sources.redhat.com).  The files
gdb/TODO and gdb/MAINTAINERS can then be updated to reflect that changed
reality.
