with the hint of Daniel i wrote a wrapper for select() which worked fine for
gdb 5.3.

GDB 6.0 shows the correct backtrace even without any code modifications.

p.s.
why does 'make install' do no strip on gdb? A 20 MB executable looks a bit
oversized:)

I like the unstripped gdb, because I have to debug gdb occasionally
Most of the people who are in a position to edit the 'make install'
instructions also need to debug gdb, too.  :)  So you'll have to strip
it yourself.
