What does "default" mean? It it "yes" or "no"?

It is not no, which is all that matters.

When multi-arch isn't supported for any reason, if
--enable-multi-arch nor --disable-multi-arch are used, you will get
multi-arch = default
in config.make. Setting multi-arch to default doesn't tell if
multi-arch is used or not.

If muti-arch is not supported then it is set to no, always.

Then setting muti-arch to yes makes it more clear.
