That helped debug the problem a bit. Looks like the AC_CONFIG_AUX_DIR
macro needs to be set before calling the AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE macro, but
AFTER the AC_INIT macro. If I place it before both, it just bombs
out.
OK. So, we're moving right along. Automake 1.9.5 and Autoconf 2.59a.
