A workshop about free scientific software would be interesting.

Something I have suggested in the past was a "steering committee" for
GSL, similar to SLATEC.  I sent an email to Fred James, chair of the
committee at CERN looking at numerical libraries, saying that this
could be an area where CERN could be involved.
