FTR: Compiles, checks and installs ok on Darwin 9.8.0 (ie Mac OS X 10.5.8) with
CFLAGS=-O2 -g -march=core2 -mtune=core2 -funroll-loops
-fexpensive-optimizations -ftree-vectorize -arch i386 -arch x86_64
