And, since --disable-shared did the trick, I didn't explore the problem further (you may also need to set LDFLAGS to '-Si' when you are linking to your code). But, I did bring up the multiple definitions issue with Apple. They told me that there are a few remaining issues with OS X that they are trying to resolve related to Mach-O libraries and this may be a side-effect.
