Brian:

As you guessed, there was a seg. fault from test in multifit.  Here's what 
I get from gdb (Mac OS 10.1, gsl 0.9.4, gdb 5.0, gcc 2.95.2):

PASS: pontius gsl_fit_multilinear chisq (1.55762e-06 observed vs 
1.55762e-06 expected)

Program received signal EXC_BAD_ACCESS, Could not access memory.
0x00012910 in gsl_permutation_get ()
