It worked well. For confirmation, I commented out the
following line in configure.in
rm -f .tmp.el .tmp.out
and checked the contents of .tmp.out after running
configure. It contains:
/usr/local/share/emacs/20.6/etc/

Great. I prefer to use ! as a delimiter for clarity.
