It worked well. For confirmation, I commented out the
following line in

  rm -f .tmp.el .tmp.out

and checked the contents of .tmp.out after running
configure. It contains:

Great. I prefer to use ! as a delimiter for clarity.

  emacsver=`sed 's!^.*/\([[0-9]][[0-9\.]]*\)/.*!\1!' .tmp.out`
