    This is a known problem with GDB of that timeframe. You can search the gdb mailing list to find resolutions for the problem. (Or you can simply use a newer version of GDB/Insight, like 5.2 or CVS.) Luckily, you're not on cygwin (where 5.2/CVS have "issues").

 Two comments:
 
 1) utils.c is gdb's file, not Insight's. This should go to
 gdb@sources.redhat.com.
 2) This is really a problem with bfd (as I recall). See discussion on

Ive downloaded the source for both insight 5.1.1 and 5.0
and it wont build in either case. the ./configure worked
