Unless neccessary, get a new version. (You say you downloaded the lastest? Try a snapshot! That's what I've been using most weeks for many years.) Simply edit src/libgui/configure.ac (may be called configure.in) and remove the section with "-fwritable-strings". NOTE: This will not work if your version of insight is using Tcl/Tk 8.1!
