Hmm. Didn't get the explicit build rule:

%.$(OBJEXT): $(srcdir)/%.c
        $(CC) -c $(ALL_CFLAGS) $<

Does this line appear in the generated Makefile? Send it and I'll
compare with what my Red Hat box outputs.
