I've done exactly this:
keiths valrhona ~/tmp/insight-5.0 1073 >head config.status

--prefix=/home/keiths/tmp/built --norecursion

And it worked just fine for me (on RH linux 7.0). So now the question
begs: what does you environment look like? Is CYGNUS_GUI_LIBRARY set?
Normally, we do not set any environment variables.
