I now have installed libgcj 2.95.1 in the gcc 2.95.2 tree (same prefix).

Now I am trying to compile the following small program using 'gcj -I./oracle
-C HTMLappData.java':

import oracle.html.*;
import java.lang.*;
import oracle.html.*;
import oracle.rdbms.*;
import oracle.plsql.*;
import oracle.owas.wrb.services.http.*;
import java.util.*;
import java.io.*;

public class HTMLappData
{
    private HtmlHead hd = new HtmlHead("This is a test");
    private HtmlBody bd = new HtmlBody();
    private HtmlPage pg = new HtmlPage(hd, bd);

    public HTMLappData()
    {
    }

}

This results in the following error message:

gcj -I./oracle -C HTMLappData.java
HTMLappData.java:33319: Type `HtmlHead' also potentially defined in package
`oracle.html'.
<<file too short - unexpected EOF>>

Attached is the libgcj.spec I have installed.

'gcj -v' tells me:
Reading specs from
/usr/opt/gcc-2.95.2/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/2.95.2/specs
Reading specs from /usr/opt/gcc-2.95.2/lib/libgcj.spec
rename spec lib to liborig

This is interesting because the line number seems totally wrong.

Anyway, it is hard to say whether this represents a compiler bug or

The `<<file too shot - unexpected EOF>>' denotes bogus line/column
number information as obtained/mangled by the compiler. I'm wondering
what the oracle.zip file really contains.

I have extraced the oracle.zip file so there is a oracle directory, no file.
It contains the list of files attached.

All right. I guess you'll have to file a PR (or annotate the existing
one, but I don't think it exists yet) with the location from where you
downloaded the file. I'll have a look at it -- class files compilation
problems need to be solved quickly.

That should be "--enable-java-gc=boehm". But it probably didn't make a
difference... boehm is used by default in libgcj, so you don't even have
to mention it on the "configure" line.

What were the error messages? You mean complaining about libgcj.spec?
Make sure the file /usr/opt/gcc-2.95.2/lib/libgcj.spec exists. If not,
libgcj may not have built properly.

One thing the FAQ may or may not mention is that gcj must be in your
PATH before you attempt to build libgcj (I sometimes forget this
myself).

The help messages ought to be fixed. Perhaps we should file a bug in
gnats?

> What does this mean? Which alternatives do I have?

For now, posix threads and boehm gc are the only viable options. You
can disable them, but that only results in a crippled libgcj, since Java
requires threads and GC.

Right.

Try unzipping oracle.zip and setting your CLASSPATH to point at the
unzipped directories.

gcj can't handle compressed zip or jar archives today. (but it can
read uncompressed zip files) It doesn't recover cleanly from this
failure mode either.

I didn't see this in Gnats, so I submitted a PR for this.

Hmm, I hadn't heard that. In any case, I have my build directory as a
subdir of sourceware/libgcj and my builds are fine (on a i686-pc-linux-gnu
host). Could be true though of another project I guess..

Just to be clear for all readers, for our purposes the build cannot be
done in the same dir as the configure script.

No. If you haven't yet, you must also install libgcj along with the
compiler. The base directory (--prefix) must be the same for both.

Release libgcj-2.95.2 corresponds to your compiler. However it is
missing many features, such as java.sql, java.math, java.lang.reflect
and JNI. Some of these have been added in newer snapshots but you must
use a snapshot GCC for these as well. See
http://sourceware.cygnus.com/java/download.html .

Now I can compile it! All the gcc-2.95.2 stuff is installed in
/usr/opt/gcc-2.95.2.
So I use
1) '../configure --enable-threads=posix --enable-gc=boehm
--prefix=/usr/opt/gcc-2.95.2'
2) make
3) make install
Is this ok?
Now calling gcj with the test file still results in the same error
messages.

'../configure --help' did not give any explanation about enable-threads
or enable-gc.
What does this mean? Which alternatives do I have?

I would like to get away from JBuilder and Visual Cafe instead using
gcj.
Some time ago I installed the whole GCC 2.95.2 package.

My current project involves building a servlet using the Oracle
Application Server
and its JWEB cartridge.
So I copied all my source to my Linux machine, looked for the zip file
with the
Oracle classes and tried the following:

gcj -I../oracle.zip -C HTMLappData.java

What I want is get a class file from this java file.
So I suppose the '-C' flag is ok, isn't it?

Now I get the error message below.
Is this because gcj is somehow experimental or is there something wrong
with my setup?
The first time I started gcj it complained about a missing libgcj.spec.
So I looked with strace
which paths gcj checked and touched such a file. That's probably not
sufficient, is it?

Here is the error message:

I only found libgcj-2.95.1. Can I use this one instead?

I read once somewhere that the build directory should not be a
subdirectory of the source tree. I've always used:

mkdir ../libgcj-build
cd ../libgcj-build
../libgcj/configure

Now I have a configure problem:

snsrv053:nardmann[libgcj-2.95.1]>./configure
Configuring for a i686-pc-linux-gnu host.
*** Cannot currently configure in source tree.

Do I have to extract the libgcj archive somewhere in the gcc
distribution
or how do I compile it?

This should be a FAQ!

mkdir build
cd build
../configure --enable-threads=posix --enable-java-gc=boehm [...]

The `<<file too shot - unexpected EOF>>' denotes bogus line/column
number information as obtained/mangled by the compiler. I'm wondering
what the oracle.zip file really contains.

./A

I have extraced the oracle.zip file so there is a oracle directory, no file.
It contains the list of files attached.
