I don't particularly like the patch since I think the wide buffer should
be controlled by the user. But
a) it's a lot of work and I don't foresee having time for something as
unimportant as this
and
b) nobody really cares about this (the effects should be opaque)
If and when the opportunity arrives to make the correct fix it can be
made on top of the new code.
