Yeah - there's a Makefile rule in libc:
%.tar: FORCE
        git archive --prefix=$*/ $* > $@.new
        mv -f $@.new $@

I guess, this just needs to be done for ports as well in the proper way 
- unless Carlos wants to call the above manually...
