Yeah, that's not a bad idea.

I suspect that of tje effects of '--cygnus' which correspond to automake 
features (#1-#5), only #5 will result in a change to the generated 
autotools files (and thus potentially be the cause of a bisectable 
regression), but I guess I'll need to try it out to be sure :)
