chown doesn't like having a "." in the user name.  Lame.
I made it "mring" instead.

Have you tried adding a colon after the user name or specifying both
user name and group?

FreeBSD at least supports the dot as a separator between user name and
group for backwards compatibility:

  deneb[91]:~% chown a.b /dev/null
  chown: b: illegal group name

  deneb[92]:~% chown a.b: /dev/null
  chown: a.b: illegal user name

For now I'm leaving the create-user script as-is.
I sent a bug report, and Jim tells me it is fixed in fileutils 4.0q.
So someday it will work on sourceware.

Just FYI,

There is a reason. Some systems accept:

	chown user.group file
while others accept
	chown user:group file

Have you tried adding a colon after the user name or specifying both
user name and group?
