I noticed that the domain name sourceware.org was available. For my
own amusement, I bought it, and pointed it at sources.redhat.com. You
can now look at http://sourceware.org/ and http://www.sourceware.org/.
You can also send mail @sourceware.org.
sourceware.com is not, alas, available.

Sweet! I've been meaning to look at the status of Sourceware for
a little while now. Back in '98 or '99 there was some l0zers who'd
purchased the trademark rights are were telling us to stop using
the name (which I essentially ignored :-) - I'm positive their
company doesn't exist any longer. It sounded implausible even in
the silly high-times of 1999-2000.
The whois record for sourceware.com shows the owner bought it for
five years. Boo! It looks like a single person doing some side
work out of his home.

AFAICT, it looks like the current trademark owner is different from the
sourceware.com and sourceware.net domain name owners.
So, I'm not worried either.
Should we start referring to the system as sourceware.org? I tend to
call the system sourcew, er, sources, anyway.

I've been thinking about the increased use of sourceware.org. In
particular, I've been wondering about whether something like using
ecos.sourceware.org might be a good idea.
But if we listed that as the "canonical" site for eCos stuff, could we be
bitten by that trademark problem, or has that gone away now?

I like the idea of having ecos.sourceware.org. I think the trademark issue
may now be a nonissue but I don't know if anyone knows for sure.
FWIW, I did get some buyin with allowing something like
ecos.sources.redhat.com at one point here but I never followed through
on it. I suspect that window of opportunity may have passed, though.

The two guys who last owned the trademark had a startup that seemed
utterly inane even back in 1999 -- I'm sure they're gone. They might
have sold the TM to someone else, but the days of fast money and loose
women for free software are over ;-) so I rather doubt anyone would pay
for it.
