I added user sveinse (a binutils comitter) to group gcc as well:
# id sveinse
uid=9361(sveinse) gid=65511(binutils) groups=65511(binutils),65516(gcc),65500(src)
Is the proper way doing that on this box really editing /etc/group by
hand, or did I miss some command? (The usual ones I'm aware of on Solaris,
Debian,... don't exist.)

vigr is the safest way to edit /etc/group. I don't know of another way.
