Greetings
About 8 months ago I sent a note to overseers requesting that
the Source-Navigator web pages at http://sources.redhat.com/sourcenav
be redirected to http://sourcenav.sourceforge.net/. I even sent
in a patch to implement the change for the htdocs module. Problem
is, nothing ever came of it. So, I am back to again request that something
be done about this. The current situation is doing a disservice to the
community at large. The code base currently available on sources
is about two years old and it is not getting any better. The SN bug
database on sources is full of useless bug reports and people keep
adding new ones because they have no way of knowing that the
project has moved. If the web pages can't be forwarded, can someone
please delete all the Source-Navigator related web pages from sources?
Anything would be better than the current situation.

Jason did this last night but noticed that I didn't have things set up
quite the same way on the new system as the old and didn't complete
the change.
So, I fixed the setup problem and checked in Jason's change.
The source nav pages are now redirected to sourceforge.

I tried to contact the FSF a number of times about turning SN into a
FSF project like gcc or gdb. They were not interested.

I would certainly recommend that the SourceNav team require copyright
assignments for all patches to some entity, even if it is not Red Hat.

I don't know if I'm high enough but I think I'd notice, actually.
However, I'll try to get some closure on this in the next couple of
weeks.
For the record, however, I find it odd that the reassignment of rights
to Red Hat is such a big deal for SourceNav where it is not that big a
deal in the cygwin project. Sounds like a red herring to me but I
really don't care that much.

Would it help breaking this stall if I implement the redirect (so
that no Red Hat employee is involved)? Or would you have to disable
my access then?

Neither. Like Mo said, the S-N hackers didn't want to assign
copyright to Red Hat. And I couldn't find anybody at Red Hat who
would sign off on letting S-N become an independent project. I
imagine the same thing will hold true if we try to find somebody to ok
a redirect -- an absurd situation.

We tried to keep it on sourceware. It was attempted for many months
in fact. The problem was that none of the principal contributors were
interested in assigning ownership of any copyrights to Red Hat.
There was no problem GPLing donated code, it was just the
copyright assignment that was getting in the way of progress.
The feedback I got was that someone from Red Hat the corporation
would have to "approve" this, and of course it never happened.

In this case, it was Red Hat the corporation getting in the way of
progress on a project hosted on sourceware. It was only after many
months of nothing happening that the project was moved.

We didn't ask sourcenav to move and AFAIK the licensing of sourcenav
continues to be in question. So I'm not comfortable with moving it
anywhere.

Right. There are certainly a couple of sourceware projects that were
never associated with Red Hat. bzip2 springs to mind.

Some time ago, Red Hat abandoned the Source-Navigator project.
Since then, the project has found a new home at SourceForge
and a new stable version has been released. Problem is, lots
of people keep getting bad info because they are looking at
the outdated pages that still exist on sources.redhat.com.
Attached is a patch that redirects each of these pages to
the new pages at sourcenav.sourceforge.net. Could someone
with CVS write access apply this patch?
