The load average is wavering between 17 and 22 on sourceware and I
see our old frined htdig running.
H-P is this ok or should we be worrying?

Worry, I guess. It chew for 10 hours, compared to 6 hours on
the gcc side. The sourceware db files are slightly larger than
the gcc ones, but not 67% larger; more like 15%. That's the
only thing in the log that looks unexpected and the file sizes
are as expected compared to April 7 (the last successful update,
though it now strikes me as odd that it was at an uneven date).
This was the first "normal" update since I re-enabled it on the
sourceware side, so let's see what happens on the next update.
The cycle is 48 hours.
