Damn, it's the stupidest mistakes which are the easiest to
overlook.

In fact the ordering (by time) is *correct*.  It just appears wrong
because I didn't format the microsecond field with leading zeroes (%06d) ...

Thanks everyone, I will keep going down the timestamp route.
