Hi,

I want to use systemtap and installed rpm's
systemtap-0.9.7-5.el5
systemtap-runtime-0.9.7-5.el5
kernel-debuginfo-common-2.6.18-164.el5.x86_64.rpm
kernel-debuginfo-2.6.18-164.el5.x86_64.rpm

I cannot find the correct kernel-devel rpm.

uname -a gives as kernel 2.6.18-164.0.0.0.1

I have the following questions:
1.Did I install the correct rpm's?
2.Where can I find the correct kernel-devel?
3.Can it be omitted?
4.
When running script probe kernel.function("*") {}
I get the errors below:
Pass 1: parsed user script and 52 library script(s) in
250usr/0sys/265real ms.
semantic error: libdwfl failure (missing x86_64 kernel/module debuginfo
under '/lib/modules/2.6.18-164.0.0.0.1.el5xen/build'): No such file or
directory while resolving probe point kernel.function("*")
semantic error: no probes found
Pass 2: analyzed script: 0 probe(s), 0 function(s), 0 embed(s), 0
global(s) in 0usr/0sys/6real ms.
Pass 2: analysis failed. Try again with another '--vp 01' option.

Is that due to the missing kernel-devel package or is something else
wrong?

Regards Hans

This looks strange. I would expect uname -r to say 2.6.18-164.el5.

It should be on Red Hat Network (well, 2.6.18-164.0.0.0.1
probably isn't but 2.6.18-164.el5 probably is).

Only if you compiled the stap modules on a system that has it.

It looks like kernel-debuginfo and kernel-devel for that version are
missing. I am not sure where you got version 2.6.18-164.0.0.0.1
because it doesn't sound like something that was every built by Red Hat
and if it was, I doubt it has ever been released.

What does "rpm -qa | grep kernel" say? What version are you booting on
(as per grub.conf).

Hi Adrien and others,

Thanks for your reply.

uname -r gives: 2.6.18-164.0.0.0.1.el5xen

rpm -qa | grep kernel
kernel-xen-2.6.18-164.0.0.0.1.el5
kernel-headers-2.6.18-164.0.0.0.1.el5
kernel-xen-devel-2.6.18-164.0.0.0.1.el5

So I think I had the wrong rpm's.
I have very little knowledge about kernels as I am and Oracle dba so
bear with me.

Do I need to add xen specific rpms?

Regards Hans-Peter

You are missing the debuginfo for that kernel. I am not sure
whether the package should be named kernel-xen-debuginfo-2.6.18-164.0.0.0.1.el5
or kernel-debuginfo-2.6.18-164.0.0.0.1.el5. Whoever provided you this kernel
should be able to provide you the matching debuginfo.

Hi,

In the mean time I upgrade my kernel to 2.6.18-194.11.3.0.1.el5xen

The packages I installed are the following:
kernel-debuginfo-common-2.6.18-194.11.3.0.1.el5
kernel-headers-2.6.18-194.11.3.0.1.el5
kernel-xen-devel-2.6.18-194.11.3.0.1.el5
kernel-xen-2.6.18-194.11.3.0.1.el5
kernel-devel-2.6.18-194.11.3.0.1.el5
kernel-xen-debuginfo-2.6.18-194.11.3.0.1.el5

The last one kernel-xen-debuginfo was needed to get systemtap running.

Thanks for you help

In general a systemtap prevents scripts from overloading resources. So
it will shut down when it sees the script is using excessive time or
resources. Most of these limits are tunable though. See an overview
here: http://sourceware.org/systemtap/wiki/TipExhaustedResourceErrors
In your case it seems there are too many kretprobes (kernel function
return probes) active at the same time. You should be able to raise that
limit by running with stap -DKRETACTIVE=nnn

Groetjes,

Mark

Hello all,

In order to be able to measure the IO write times of asynchronous and
direct io's of a certain process
I have to relate the io_submit to the io_getevents.
(Or at least I guess that the IO starts when the io_submit starts and it
completes when the io_getevents
 returns.

It seems that parameter 1 is the same for related calls.

io_submit(47052561891328, 1, {{0x2acb475edfe0, 0, 1, 0, 34}}) = 1
gettimeofday({1294832202, 259883}, NULL) = 0
io_getevents(47052561891328, 1, 128, {{0x2acb475edfe0, 0x2acb475edfe0,
8192, 0}}, {600, 0}) = 1

Is there a way that I can read parameter #1 so that I can relate them?

Regards Hans-Peter

Certainly. List the probe points and available script/context
variables:

% stap -L 'syscall.io_*'

syscall.io_cancel name:string ctx_id:long iocb_uaddr:long result_uaddr:long argstr:string $ctx_id:aio_context_t $iocb:struct iocb* $result:struct io_event* $__func__:char[] const
syscall.io_destroy name:string ctx:long argstr:string $ctx:aio_context_t $__func__:char[] const
syscall.io_getevents name:string ctx_id:long min_nr:long nr:long events_uaddr:long timeout_uaddr:long timestr:string argstr:string $ctx_id:aio_context_t $min_nr:long int $nr:long int $events:struct io_event* $timeout:struct timespec*
syscall.io_setup name:string maxevents:long ctxp_uaddr:long argstr:string $nr_events:unsigned int $ctxp:aio_context_t* $__func__:char[] const
syscall.io_submit name:string ctx_id:long nr:long iocbpp_uaddr:long argstr:string $ctx_id:aio_context_t $nr:long int $iocbpp:struct iocb**

The ctx and/or ctx_id variables give you that value. (io_destroy
calls it "ctx", inconsistently with the others.) So

% stap -e 'probe syscall.io_submit, syscall.io_getevents {
println(ctx_id) /* or store it into a script global, or whatever */
}'
