https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=19500

            Bug ID: 19500
           Summary: .callee test failures
           Product: systemtap
           Version: unspecified
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: translator
          Assignee: systemtap at sourceware dot org
          Reporter: dsmith at redhat dot com
  Target Milestone: ---

On RHEL7 s390x (3.10.0-327.el7.s390x), the callee.exp testcase gets the
following failures:

====
Running ../../src/testsuite/systemtap.base/callee.exp ...
FAIL: callee (inlined - probing .callee(foo).call)
FAIL: callee (reloc - listing shlib foo .callees)

                === systemtap Summary ===

# of expected passes            31
# of unexpected failures        2
====

But, in addition .callee causes lots of failures in the listing_mode.exp
testcase:

                === systemtap Summary ===

# of expected passes            1236
# of unexpected failures        168
# of known failures             62
...
# grep ^FAIL systemtap.sum | fgrep -v callee
#
====

All 168 unexpected failures are related to callee probes.

A similar situation is seen on RHEL7 ppc64 (3.10.0-327.el7.ppc64):

====
Running ../../src/testsuite/systemtap.base/callee.exp ...
FAIL: callee (inlined - probing .callee(foo).call)
FAIL: callee (extern - probing main .callees)
FAIL: callee (reloc - probing shlib foo .callees)

                === systemtap Summary ===

# of expected passes            30
# of unexpected failures        3
====

On ppc64, listing_mode.exp doesn't show the failures that s390x shows.

--- Comment #1 from David Smith <dsmith at redhat dot com> ---
This appears to be the result of s390x's odd debuginfo. On x86_64, you'll see
something like this (from 'eu-readelf --debug-dump libreloc.so'):

====
...
 [    2d]    subprogram
             external             (flag_present) Yes
             name                 (string) "bar"
...
 [    79]    subprogram
             external             (flag_present) Yes
             name                 (string) "foo"
...
             GNU_all_call_sites   (flag_present) Yes
...
 [    bb]      GNU_call_site
               low_pc               (addr) +0x00000000000006e2 <foo+0x12>
               abstract_origin      (ref4) [    2d]
...
====

This means that foo() has one callee, bar(), which we can see since foo() has 1
GNU_call_site attribute, whose abstract_origin is 2d (which maps to bar()).

On s390x, we see the following (from 'eu-readelf --debug-dump libreloc.so'):

====
...
 [    2d]    subprogram
             external             (flag_present) Yes
             name                 (string) "bar"
...
 [    7b]    subprogram
             external             (flag_present) Yes
             name                 (string) "foo"
...
             GNU_all_call_sites   (flag_present) Yes
 [    bd]      GNU_call_site
               low_pc               (addr) +0x000000000000073a <foo+0x22>
...
====

On s390x, we've got a GNU_call_site attribute, but it doesn't have an
abstract_origin attribute to tell us which function was called.

I've sent an email to a gcc developer and we'll see if he can shine any light
on this.

On ppc64, the debuginfo looks reasonable. In the 'reloc - probing shlib foo
.callees' case, what happens is that _caller_match() gets called in the probe
handler, returns false, so the handler exits early. With STAP_CALLEE_MATCHALL
defined in a couple of places, the test completely passes.

When the test fails in the 'reloc - probing shlib foo .callees' case, here's
what _caller_match() sees:

====
# stap -DDEBUG_SYMBOLS=1 -e 'probe
process("./reloc").library("libreloc.so").function("foo").callees {
printf("caller %s callee %s\n", usymname(ustack(1)),  ppfunc()) }' -c "./reloc
; true"

(note that the code for the last debug print isn't checked in)

Since the stack address (0x3fffb03d0964) doesn't *exactly* match the relocated
address (0x3fffb03d0968), _caller_match() returns 0. But, as you can see in
this case, the 2 addresses are only off by 4 bytes. Perhaps our math isn't
quite right somewhere.

Commit 83b2752 added multiarch testing to callee.exp. With this commit, I'm
seeing the following error on an x86_64 fedora rawhide system:

FAIL: callee (simple - probing .callee(foo).return - 32-bit)

On a RHEL7 ppc64 machine, I'm seeing the following:

FAIL: callee (simple - probing .callees(3) - 64-bit)
FAIL: callee (extern - probing main .callees - 64-bit)
FAIL: callee (reloc - probing shlib foo .callees - 64-bit)
FAIL: callee (simple - probing .callees(2) - 32-bit)
FAIL: callee (multicalls - probing main .callees(2) - 32-bit)

--- Comment #4 from David Smith <dsmith at redhat dot com> ---
On rawhide x86_64 (4.5.0-0.rc5.git0.1.fc24.x86_64), the "callee (simple -
probing .callee(foo).return - 32-bit)" failure is the equivalent of doing the
following:

====
# gcc ../../src/testsuite/systemtap.base/callee.simple.c -m32 -O -g -lm -o
callee
# stap -e 'probe process("./callee").function("main").callee("level1").return {
printf("caller %s callee %s\n", usymname(ustack(0)), ppfunc()) }' -c ./callee
WARNING: Child process exited with signal 11 (Segmentation fault)
WARNING: /usr/local/bin/staprun exited with status: 1
Pass 5: run failed. [man error::pass5]
====

Without stap, callee runs without getting a SIGSEGV. This appears to be a
kernel problem, since I get the same SIGSEV without systemtap by just using
perf:

====
# gcc ../../src/testsuite/systemtap.base/callee.simple.c -m32 -O -g -lm -o
callee
# perf probe -x ./callee 'cmr=main%return'
Added new event:
  probe_callee:cmr     (on main%return in
/discer.farm/es/scratch/dsmith/systemtap/rawhide-64-2/testsuite/callee)

You can now use it in all perf tools, such as:

        perf record -e probe_callee:cmr -aR sleep 1

# perf record -e probe_callee:cmr -aR ./callee
[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]
[ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.148 MB perf.data (1 samples) ]
Segmentation fault
====

On RHEL7 x86_64 (3.10.0-347.el7.x86_64), I get the same "callee (simple -
probing .callee(foo).return - 32-bit)" failure when running the new callee.exp.
The output looks similar to the rawhide system:

====
# gcc ../../src/testsuite/systemtap.base/callee.simple.c -m32 -O -g -lm -o
callee
# stap -e 'probe process("./callee").function("main").callee("level1").return {
printf("caller %s callee %s\n", usymname(ustack(0)), ppfunc()) }' -c ./callee
WARNING: Child process exited with signal 11 (Segmentation fault)
WARNING: /usr/local/bin/staprun exited with status: 1
Pass 5: run failed. [man error::pass5]
====

However, when run with perf, the target doesn't get a SIGSEGV:

====
# perf probe -x ./callee 'callee32=main%return'
Added new event:
  probe_callee:callee32 (on main%return in
/discer.farm/es/scratch/dsmith/systemtap/rhel7-64/testsuite/callee)

You can now use it in all perf tools, such as:

        perf record -e probe_callee:callee32 -aR sleep 1

# perf record -e probe_callee:callee32 -aR ./callee
[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]
[ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.145 MB perf.data (1 samples) ]
====

So, the RHEL7 failure appears to be a systemtap problem, since it doesn't
happen with perf.
