            Bug ID: 28767
           Summary: Unable to run script on Ubuntu 20.04
           Product: systemtap
           Version: unspecified
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: runtime
          Assignee: systemtap at sourceware dot org
          Reporter: akulg2 at illinois dot edu
  Target Milestone: ---

Hi,

I have installed Ubuntu 20.04 Desktop and I am trying to run a systemtap script
to capture systemwide system calls using a script found at
https://sourceware.org/systemtap/examples/process/strace.stp. I have installed
Systemtap translator/driver (version 4.2/0.176, Debian version 4.2-3)
and have GCC version gcc version 9.3.0 (Ubuntu 9.3.0-10ubuntu2). When running
the script I get the following two errors:

error: storage size of ‘ts’ isn’t known
236986 |  struct compat_timex ts;
       |                      ^~

error: invalid application of ‘sizeo’ to incomplete type ‘struct compat_timex’
236994 |       sizeof(struct compat_timex)) == 0)
       |              ^~~~~~

I am unsure what is going wrong as I followed the installation steps found at:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Systemtap

--- Comment #1 from Frank Ch. Eigler <fche at redhat dot com> ---
Most likely the Ubuntu snapshot of systemtap lacks portability
patches for later kernels.

If able, try building your own copy of systemtap out of git/master.
The README file contains basic build instructions for debian/ubuntu also.

time[x] struct compatibility changes went into stap 4.3, back in summer 2020.
