Perhaps you could handle the "Desolation of Smaug" with the right combination of terrain coatings (or lack thereof), units (ruins?), and the ability to use unusual fonts (preferably with the ability to provide a list of fonts to fall back on, should your font of choice not exist on the player's computer).
