I just found the xhippo package on the GNU ftp server.

  $ cat README
  Welcome to GNU xhippo, a generic front-end for sound players.

  The xhippo documentation (in texinfo and several derived formats) can
  be found in the doc/ subdirectory.

  Please report xhippo bugs to [...]

Why did nobody contribute xhippo so far? That's an incredible
deficiency. The Cygwin distro is practically unusable without
this package.

It requires libid3, libid3tag, nftw() <--- important:
configure: WARNING: nftw not found. Add Directory will be disabled.

If you contribute nftw to newlib, I'll contribute an xhippo package ;)

Wow, thats what I call "Prompte Lieferung" ;)

Unfortunately xhippo wil not be very useful as long as there is no
mp3 player in the distribution. I tried to run xhippo with no
changes, then there was the wrong mp3 player in the config file,
when I terminated xhippo all cygwin processes where terminated,
including cygserver.  Very bad...

Sure there is. How about cygstart?

Is it a command line mp3 player? Never heard of it ;)

It should be no problem to build ogg123 or other mp3 player for
Cygwin, I wonder that nobody wanted to contribute things like
this up to now.

Probably because windows already has a gazillion native mp3 players
already. I'm sure some of them have command line mode.

There's also the nasty issue of the Fraunhofer mp3 patent.

That is the reason why there exists ogg and friends, isn't it?

Btw., libogg and libvorbis compile practically OOTB on Cygwin,
even with working libtool and DLLs and stuff. If anybody wants
to maintain the packages... [hint, hint]

I have prepared them for inclusion in the distro, but I'm reluctant
to maintain the packages because I have NADA clue about sound and
sound compression algorithms...

...well, except for the compressed sound of a human with a hippo
on top of it.
