Actually I miscalculated the answer (42 = 0x2A = *):

W = 0x57 =  87
h = 0x68 = 104
y = 0x79 = 121
? = 0x3F =  63

87 - 104 + 121 - 63 = 41

So the correct answer is probably: 41 = 0x29

  I am obliged to point out that it was Deep Thought who came up with the
answer, and got it right; and the Earth's job was to work out the question.
Score -5 sci-fi pedant points and drop a hippo on yourself!

  And the Vogons (collectively) didn't destroy the Earth; Prostetnic Vogon
Jeltz did it on his own initiative after taking a bribe from Gag Halfrunt
and the Intergalactic Federation of Psychiatrists who don't want the
question known in case everyone starts leading happy and productive lives,
thus putting them out of a job.

    cheers,

And? All I claimed was that the question the Earth came up with has a
different answer, which falls one short of the ultimate one...

  But, as we all know, the question the Earth came up with was "What do you
get if you multiply six by nine", which is off by twelve, not one!

We don't know if that's the question the Earth came up with. All we know
is that was *one* of the questions the Earth came up with. It remained a
mystery whether that really was the ultimate question. Besides, with the
universe being as crazy as it is, the above question may not be off by as
much as you think.

But if you take a 7 and add a little ), you get a 9. So the question
was really off 41?
