Hippo anecdote:

I was the "mystery reader" for my son's kindergarten class
this week and the first book I read happened to contain a
picture of a hippo. My son blurts out that "hippos are
dangerous" which I had to confirm (while discouraging such
outbursts).

I may be mistaken, but I think the other students and the
teacher looked at us both a bit funny after hearing that
we considered hippos dangerous.

Sometimes too much knowledge is not a good thing. :-)

Rather than _explain_ that hippos are dangerous, what you should have done
was *demonstrated* that hippos are dangerous.

Dropping one on somebody from a very great height is usually a
sufficiently effective demonstration of this fact to convince even the most
hardened of skeptics... :)

Dropping one on somebody is often hard to arrange. What gets me is when
they hide in dark corners and then lunge out at you unexpectedly. Hippos
are really masters of terror.

And, of course, even the children would understand the old parable about
hippos' poor vision.

What scares me even more is when they do ballet.

Have you ever seen a hippo in a tu-tu?

Nonononono, it's what they do when they want to hide! It's a form of
camouflage, since tu-tu's greatly resemble the pink, frond-like leaves of
the water lilies that grow abundantly in the hippo's natural environment.

Hippos in the wild are greatly fond of sheltering and hiding behind this
foliage, but it does have the unfortunate consequence that they tend to get
a bit panicky when you take one for a night at the opera, since they don't
know how many other hippos might be hiding out there, watching them.

Actually, I reckon you'd find that very _few_ kids these days have seen
Fantasia. OTOH quite a lot of grown adults of *our* age may well have done
so ....

Which is probably what prompted the whole hippo discussion anyway.

I fear you are not taking this subject seriously, none of you for instance mention the dangers of
hippos hiding in your bowl of custard!!!

I never trusted custard. Sneaky stuff. It doesn't get any better

Drat!
And you know if you look closely at your Hippo photos, you can see the fossillised remains of
