Ah, thanks.

Quick question: Is there a better way to run KDE, then?

I use XDMCP sessions for remote KDE. Or you may be

Hi,

I am trying to run cygwin on a vista machine, but get the message about
the keyboard definition. In the FAQ files I read I should contact this
email adress and include the following information

(--) winConfigKeyboard - Layout: "00000413" (00000413)
(EE) Keyboardlayout "Dutch" (00000413) is unknown

If you could help me I would be very pleased

thanks!

Hi
I'm an avid user of Cygwin and when I load X11 with the startx shell
command, my French Canadian layout is not recognized.

Here's the error I get:

(--) winConfigKeyboard - Layout: "00001009" (00001009)
(EE) Keyboardlayout "Français (Canada)" (00001009) is unknown

I know you're constantly improving Cygwin so I thought I'd give you the info.

There are a few French Canadian Layouts out there, here's how mine
looks like: http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/keyboards/kbdca.htm

In the mean time, if you have any suggestion as to how I can use the
-xkblayout command line option with startx, (changing some line in a
script or a config file for instance) please tell me. If there is a
better solution as well, I'm open.

Thanks

Alexis Dorais

startkde involves a window manager which conflicts with
the internal window manager of Cygwin/X invoked by
-multiwindow option. So the keyboard will work if you
remove the option from your startxwin.bat.

Hi all,

I'm having an odd problem. I'm connecting from my Windows 2000 Pro laptop to a remote machine running Debian stable (woody). I connect using startxwin.bat, and connect with SSH, enabling X11 Port Forwarding. I get to a bash shell on the remote machine, and all is well. I can type commands fine, and I start kde with startkde.

KDE works as expected (except for a question about speed, which I'll address in a separate post), except that it doesn't accept keyboard input. I can use the mouse and run apps, but I can't type anything.

I'm not using a non-US keyboard or anything, so this is a bit mystifying. Is there something I'm missing to get the graphical session to recognize keystrokes?

Thanks.

XFree86-xserv-4.2.0-30 has been released. When it appears on the
mirrors it will support Portuguese keyboard detection.

Thanks Alexander.

The xserver compiles the keymap on startup. If xkbcomp works on the command
line, it should also work for the server. So I'm stuck and have no idea
why it does not work.

Just a few things to look after:

- is /tmp is a binary mount? run mount an see if there is an entry for /tmp
with binmode or an entry for / with binmode. If not, then mount at least
  the /tmp directory in binmode.
- the xserver uses /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkbcomp (not the one in /usr/X11R6/bin).
Try the xkbcomp commandline with this binary.

Hello again,

May be this info can help: I have installed cygwin-xfree on a compact armada notebook, and the keyboard works nice,
even when there is not XFree86 config file. I have tried that on the desktop pc, and i still do have an us keyboard.
In case this info do not help, please could you give me a couple of advises (or www address) to compile the spanish keyboard
on the desktop pc?

Thanks

This means the xkb layout definitons are in place and xkbcomp works.

get http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~goal/xfree/XF86Config.bz2, unpack it
to /etc/X11R/Xf86Config and replace the line
# Option "XkbLayout" "de"
with
     Option "XkbLayout" "pt"

If this works for you, can you please run the program from
http://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~goal/xfree/keyboard.tar.gz
and send me the output? It queries windows for the installed
keyboard and keyboardlayout. If I know these values, I can
add them to the preset XFree keyboardlayouts.

Yes. There are plenty of helpful and knowledgeable people on the
<cygwin-xfree at cygwin dot com> list, where questions regarding XFree86
should be sent. I've redirected this query there, and reset the Reply-To
appropriately. Please remove <cygwin at cygwin dot com> from further
replies.

can ypu please try setxkbmap de or "setxkbmap de_CH" or "setxkbmap de"
and please report if you had success.

If it won't work, you can get at lease a german modmap from
http://www-usercgi.tu-chemnitz.de/~goal/xfree . There is a archive
with modmaps for various countries which redhat ships with their linux.
Maybe there is also a swiss one.

You may also export the modmap from your linux pc. call "xmodmap -pke".
You may have to remove some of the empty entries at the end.

bye

Using xmodmap is the answer. Creating the file is great if you are an
expert, if not you can download a lovely little xmodmap input file
generator called 'xkeycaps' that has a really nice GUI. It can be
downloaded from most Linux/Solaris download sites.
