Hi folk,
A new release of setup.exe has been made. As usual it's
accessible at http://www.cygwin.com/setup.exe.

It includes the following key new features:
* New GUI that should be less prone to 'disappearing'.
* Can download from multiple mirrors - use CTRL-Click or Shift-Click in
the mirror site dialog.
* Updated chooser that allows full installs with ease, as well as source
only installs of packages.

as well as numerous bug-fixes and under-the-hood improvements.

Thanks go out to all the contributors to this version, which includes
(In reverse date order):

Me!
Michael Chase
Jason Tishler
Christopher Faylor
Corinna Vinschen
Gary R. Van Sickle
Jan Nieuwenhuizen

... sorry if I've missed anyone

Cheers,
Rob

I tried the new SETUP.EXE. The problem is it doesn't recognize my previous
installation or rather my previous downloads! Instead it creates another
folder named according to the server it connected and download the packages
into it. Anyone can help me with this?

Thanks,

Benny Ng

Got a BlueScreen after installing from the net the source code for the cygutils package.

The download succeeds, installation puts the following files in /usr/src

cygutils-1.0.0.tar.bz2 ¦ 119174
cygutils-1.0.0-1.sh ¦ 5142
cygutils-1.0.0-1.patch ¦ 3395

then BOOM.

After rebooting I found that all three files are filled with zero bytes.

Additionally in /etc/setup I have now my installed.db file filled with zero bytes.

installed.db ¦ 3689¦19.03.02¦08:51
installed.db.old ¦ 5948¦12.03.02¦09:08

Any hints, how to debug this ?

My environment is

System: WinNT 4.0/SP3 - 196 MB Ram
          Cygwin 1.3.10-1
           - everything mounted binary,
           - CYGWIN = tty title binmode ntea nontsec

Ciao
  Volker

I like the new GUI, only problem is with fonts.. I see them a little "out of
borders"... maybe because I use larger fonts than big fonts, but I think it
is solvable anyway (no hurry, they're pretty readable anyway ^_^)

New features are real good =)

Hi all,

I'm using the new version of setup.exe, and package dependency checking
doesn't seem to work any more.

With the old setup.exe (version 2.125.2.10), if I do "install from internet"
and choose to install the "texmf" package, then the "texmf-base" and
"tetex-beta" packages are both automatically selected for installation. If
I then cancel and fire up the new setup.exe (version 1.194.2.15), this does
not happen any more. If I pick the "texmf" package, then only that package
is selected. When I click OK, only that one package is installed.

I am using the same mirror each time (programming.ccp14.ac.uk).

According to setup.ini, "@ texmf" ... "requires: cygwin tetex-beta
texmf-base".

Kind regards,

Jon Foster

The new (2.194.2.15) setup.exe is not behaving as I would
expect. In brief, it re-downloads the same
packages each time it is run. Details below.
Am I misunderstanding or is this a bug?

Environment:
NT4SP6a with fresh Cygwin install made on 15th March (with
previous setup.exe). This install was done in two
stages - download from internet then install from local
directory. Several optional packages were selected, and
latest (non-Exp) versions were selected for each package.

Actions:

1)
In "Download from Internet" mode, I change the view to "Full",
and Setup offers to download several updated packages. The
selection seems fine - they correspond with recent package
update announcements since 15th March. I don't make any changes,
to the offered selections, click Next, and the download proceeds.
Examining the results all looks ok - the new packages and new
setup.ini have been added under a new directory corresponding to
the mirror I chose (programming.ccp14.ac.uk). The directory name
is a horror
(http%3a%2fprogramming.ccp14.ac.uk%2fftp-mirror%2f
 programming%2fcygwin%2fpub%2fcygwin)
but no matter.

2)
I repeat (1) as before. Same settings and same mirror.
I am expecting that it will notice the downloads just done,
and offer no further updates. But it offers exactly the same
set (reporting that I still have the earlier versions), and downloads
them again (to the same subdirectory).

3)
I now try to install from my local directory, but setup.exe
reports "This setup.ini is older than the one you used last
time you installed Cygwin. Proceed anyway?" Being cautious,
I say No, and check the setup.ini files. I find the one from
my original download in the top-level directory dated 15 March
with setup-timestamp: 1016041807 setup-version: 2.125.2.10,
and the new one in the mirror subdirectory dated 20 March
with setup-timestamp: 1016560222 setup-version: 2.194.2.15.
Again this all looks ok, so why the complaint? I tried
renaming the older setup.ini but this had no effect.

Here are excerpts from setup.log. I'll send the whole
setup.log and setup.log.full, provide more details and/or
investigate further myself if this would be useful.

Despite having followed the various posts, I am
still confused by the current status of setup.exe,
and I doubt if I'm alone.

Robert announced the new version on 19th March.
I downloaded setup.exe shortly after (but didn't use it)
and found I had got version 2.194.2.15. After a flurry
of mails about -luser32 and problems with mountpoints and w32api,
cgf announced on 21st March that setup.exe was being reverted
until the problem was fixed.

I just tried downloading setup.exe again and found I
still got 2.194.2.15.

So, did I manage to miss the "bad" setup.exe, or is
it still downloading from www.cygwin.com?

I've been holding off doing any updates, expecting
another announcement "any day" - but as I've not seen one
I now don't know whether to use 2.194.2.15, or the
previous version I still have (2.125.2.10).
I did try 2.194.2.15 in download mode, and got
odd results which I've previously reported.

Yes, I'm sure I could look into this further myself
given time - but I'd have thought this would be wasted
if Robert & Co are as I suspect already beavering away
trying to iron out these problems.

We figured out how to work around the "missing -luser32" problem by
repacking a couple of packages. So it was no longer necessary to have
pulled the latest setup. So it's back.
