All:

I see the following when trying to open a Cygwin bash shell on my Win10 PC after applying updates today, 4/2/2017; I didn't see this before the latest Win10 update:

      0 [main] bash 11884 child_info_fork::abort: C:\cygwin\bin\cygiconv-2.dll: Loaded to different address: parent(0xFA0000) != child(0xE80000)
-bash: fork: retry: No child processes
      1 [main] bash 11908 child_info_fork::abort: C:\cygwin\bin\cygiconv-2.dll: Loaded to different address: parent(0xFA0000) != child(0xE80000)
-bash: fork: retry: No child processes
      0 [main] bash 11928 child_info_fork::abort: C:\cygwin\bin\cygiconv-2.dll: Loaded to different address: parent(0xFA0000) != child(0xE60000)
-bash: fork: retry: No child processes
      2 [main] bash 11964 child_info_fork::abort: C:\cygwin\bin\cygiconv-2.dll: Loaded to different address: parent(0xFA0000) != child(0xF30000)
-bash: fork: retry: No child processes
      0 [main] bash 12008 child_info_fork::abort: C:\cygwin\bin\cygiconv-2.dll: Loaded to different address: parent(0xFA0000) != child(0xE50000)
-bash: fork: Resource temporarily unavailable

Any command issued from the Cygwin bash shell gives output similar to what's shown above. I rebooted my PC after applying the updates. I haven't tried additional reboots yet.

Here's the list of Win10 updates that were just applied: (some of these updates are probably don't-care)

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, 2016 x64 Edition - March 2017 (KB890830)
Security Update for Lync 2010 X64 (KB4010299)
Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4013418)
Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4013429)
Security Update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1607 (for x64-based Systems) (KB4014329)
Security Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB4013867)

I'm attaching a cygcheck.out file, collected from a Windows command prompt with cygcheck -s -v -r because I can't bring up a Cygwin command shell.

Regards,
Gavin Bowlby

All:

I reinstalled Cygwin on my Win10 PC, and now the problem has disappeared.

I see the following when trying to open a Cygwin bash shell on my Win10 PC after applying updates today, 4/2/2017; I didn't see this before the latest Win10 update:

I believe this is a classic case where rebasing is required. See
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/33125842/what-does-rebaseall-in-cygwin-do
for details. Sometimes the problem can be fixed by rebooting and
starting a Cygwin app (e.g., Bash) very soon after boot (so that the
DLLs get loaded at their preferred addressed), but that is a temporary
workaround.

You can rebase all the DLLs as follows:

- Terminate _all_ Cygwin apps (don't forget about daemons like sshd).
- Open a Command Prompt.
- Run "ash" (a shell included with Cygwin). Do not run "bash".
- Enter command "rebaseall".
- I usually follow this with a reboot, but that may not be necessary.

Hope this helps.

Greetings, Fran Litterio!

That's not how to do it.

1. Run

  rebase-trigger full

2. Shutdown all Cygwin processes.
3. Run setup utility to the end.

Thanks, Andrey. I have seen those instructions, but the rebaseall
command itself says this when run in Bash:

$ rebaseall
rebaseall: only ash or dash processes are allowed during rebasing
     Exit all Cygwin processes and stop all Cygwin services.
     Execute ash (or dash) from Start/Run... or a cmd or command window.
     Execute '/bin/rebaseall' from ash (or dash).

Is there evidence that the instructions displayed by rebaseall are
incorrect? Is it possible that the setup utility simply runs rebaseall?

No, documentation of the utility is correct, but process you described is
obsolete. rebaseall was integrated into setup for a long time now.
