gcc 32-bit compiler returns error 1 immediately

I have installed the 64 verswon of gcc and it works fine
I also installed the 32 bit version on a 32-bit laptop and it
installs ok,  but when atteppting to comple any program with
gcc it simply returns eiimdiately without doing anything,
with return-code  1

I installed both versions the same way;  simply selected
the gcc-core packahe within gthe development section

I used the 32bit version some years ago with no problems,
so something seems to have changed !

Dear Tim,

do you compile c or c++ code (.cpp extension)?

As far as I can tell, you need "gcc-core" and "gcc-g++" if you want to compile c++ code - or at least this is what I install and it works (regularly tested with automated regression tests, which always install a fresh Cygwin)

It seems some library is missing.
Try `cygcheck gcc` to check dependencies
