Greetings.
If I set CYGWIN=tty, then cygwin programs die with
*** fatal error - couldn't initialize fd 0 for /dev/ttyN
Example:
C:\cygwin\home\lgiambro>bash -c "cmd /c 'ls'"
0 [main] ls 7440 C:\cygwin\bin\ls.exe: *** fatal error - couldn't initiali
ze fd 0 for /dev/tty7
0 [main] ls 7440 C:\cygwin\bin\ls.exe: *** fatal error - couldn't initiali
ze fd 0 for /dev/tty7

Has any progress been made on this issue? Does anyone know of a way to get around it?

This problem will eventually go away when Cygwin 1.7.10 is released and
CYGWIN=tty goes away. If this is still a problem in mintty or some
other terminal emulator then we'll look into it.
