Hi!

For a long time, I have been suffering from git problems when I
push to our server. I have been hoping that it should just
magically go away with some update or something, but I guess not.
Basically, I have to push several times for it to "take".
Like this:

$ git push origin
Counting objects: 23, done.
Delta compression using up to 8 threads.
Compressing objects: 100% (23/23), done.
Writing objects: 100% (23/23), 2.43 KiB | 0 bytes/s, done.

error: unpack failed: unpack-objects abnormal exit

! [remote rejected] master -> master (unpacker error)
error: failed to push some refs to 'file:///cygdrive/x/some path/with spaces/repo.git'

In this instance, it took three attempts, but that's of course not
always the case. Sometimes it works without retries. I have the
feeling that it depends on what is pushed; if I push the same
changes to two different repos, the failures are on the same packs.

What is not seen in the above capture is the progress reports during
the push. When a failed push is retried, it progresses pretty quickly
up to *and including* the failed pack. Then it slows down to the normal
pace (sluggish link).

This tells me that the failed pack hasn't really failed, it's just
some check that has a false positive for some mysterious reason.

It happens on two quite different machines. It might be some issue
with the remote server (/cygdrive/x) though, since that is a common
denominator?

Happens on both 32- and 64-bit Cygwin.

I don't think the "some path/with spaces"-part is affecting things,
since it sort-of works.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Peter

who has grown the habit of doing "while ! git push origin; do :; done"...

No idea whether or not this is related to your issue, but I run into pretty
frequent fork failures from cygwin git that can at least be worked around by
setting

alias git="env PATH=/usr/bin git"

in my .bashrc.

You shouldn’t be doing anything shared-database-like to a network drive. Network file sharing protocols typically either A) do not do locking correctly, or B) they run slow as molasses in order to provide proper locking semantics. Since almost no one is willing to accept option B), you usually get option A).

I think if you set Git up on the server using one of the supported server protocols [*] your problem will go away.

Even if you claim that I shouldn't do something and then list a couple
of reasons for that, you have no way of knowing if these reasons apply
or if the alternative is even worse.

I am the only person who has ever pushed to the repo in question.
Speed is not an issue, I push fairly seldom. The code base is stable.

> I think if you set Git up on the server using one of the supported server protocols [*] your problem will go away.

You almost make it sound like file:// isn't a supported server protocol.
Isn't it? If not, why is it listed under "Git on the Server" and why
is NFS mounts mentioned?

I realize that you are trying to help me work around the problem, but
finding a workaround isn't my motivation for posting here (I have a big
enough toolbox to find plenty myself). In fact, I don't think the real
problem is in the git code base. It feels more like some generic file
access race that manifests itself as freshly created files not being
found, or something like that.

Cheers,
Peter

Are you using NFS? I encounter problems with NFS, too, once in a while.
I even added some workarounds in Cygwin at one point. For instance, if
you append data to a file and then, with still open file descriptor,
call fstat, the file size will reflect the size before the append. The
MS NFS is not very reliable in keeping up with changes to metadata. A
change in Cygwin actually calls FlushFileBuffers before fetching
metadata on a descriptor open for writing. There may be other problems.

Perhaps your boilerplate footer with copyright claims, or the
raw email addresses? I took the liberty or forwarding it
to the list. I hope that was ok.

Interesting. But the patch may not be needed. The easy thing to
do seems to be to either use core.createobject = rename
or to convince some git :-) that Cygwin also needs
	OBJECT_CREATION_USES_RENAMES = UnfortunatelyNeedTo
in its section in config.mak.uname.

Reading the explanation for the option in the git Makefile makes
me think that this is obviously needed on Cygwin too.

	"Define OBJECT_CREATION_USES_RENAMES if your operating
system has problems when hardlinking a file to another
name and unlinking the original file right away (some
NTFS drivers seem to zero the contents in that scenario)."

NTFS drivers ought to be the same on Windows and Cygwin, and
I imaging that Cygwin will have a hard time fixing it up...

I was unclear, of course NFS is different from CIFS/SMB. I do not
use NFS but instead equated them in a broad terms (as in network
file systems).

*snip*

I will report back if my problems evaporate when I set
core.createobject = rename.

I assume they will.

With my Git maintainer hat on, I'm not going to include that change in
the Cygwin distributed version of Git unless and until I hear reports of
`git config core.createObject rename` helping more people.

This is clearly not a common problem (it's the first I've heard of this
sort of problem, and I've been using Git on Cygwin on NTFS for years
without hitting these issues), so I'm very reluctant to inflict the
disadvantages of using the "rename" object creation on everyone unless
it's going to fix problems for enough people to make those disadvantages
worthwhile.

(As it is, we haven't had verification that this change does anything
anyway, but if it doesn't, the entire point is irrelevant...)

Are you trying to argue that all four options given on that page are equally good, or that the page is comprehensive in its assessment of pros and cons? They aren’t, and it isn’t.

Do you believe the one who wrote it thought once about Cygwin while writing it? I don’t. I don’t even see much evidence that the author was thinking about Windows at all.

As for defending the use of CIFS by mentioning NFS, they’re very different beasts. NFS is actually worse, in that rpc.lockd is entirely optional. Yet, there it is, a “recommended” option in that chapter. What does that say about how much we should trust the information presented?

Meanwhile, locking in CIFS tends to swing the other way entirely: a single program that merely opens a file in certain naive ways creates a whole-file lock on it that even prevents read-only access, which annoys programs that assume POSIX file locking semantics.

I think you’re not far off in that assessment. What I think you’ve missed is that POSIX and Windows file locking semantics are almost diametrically opposed in their approach, and that programs that come from the POSIX world often get badly tripped up when you run them on Windows.

By putting the file I/O code entirely on the Git server, you decouple the two systems’ file locking, so that they no longer have to cooperate.

Sorry to reply this late to this old thing...

...but anyway, here are some further evidence of problems caused
by not always going with rename.

It seems like some people are migrating to msysgit over this issue.

Cheers,
