I am having a similar issue to that pictorially shown here:

https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/344502/when-scrolling-through-history-in-cygwin-terminal-window-line-gets-garbled

This is new to me as I have been using Cygwin on a Windows 7

machine for several years without encountering this problem.

(Of course, that Cygwin build was from 5 or 6 years back.)
I just moved to a Windows 10 machine and installed Cygwin from
scratch a couple of days back and ran into the issue.

Using the UP arrow to go up the history list, I have no problem till I
hit a long command (in the case shown below the problematic
command was about 50 characters long). When going one step
further up the history list, the leading characters of the long
command stay on the command line. I cannot backspace/delete
them.

I am using mintty from the standard distribution.

Specific example. I issue a 'history' command to show the

history and then use the UP arrow key to scroll upwards. After 6
Ups, I reach command no. 33 as shown below.

================================
sita 41 $ history
    2 vi .bash_profile
    3 quit
    4 eixt
    5 exit
    6 histoyr
    7 history
    8 vi .bash_profile
    9 vi .bash_profile
   10 exit
   11 history
   12 cd /usr/share
   13 ls
   14 cd
   15 history
   16 exit
   17 history
   18 history
   19 exit
   20 sdafasfas
   21 history
   22 cp /usr/share/vim/vim*/vimrc_example.vim ~/.vimrc
   23 history
   24 cp /usr/share/vim/vim*/vimrc_example.vim ~/.vimrc
   25 history
   26 ls
   27 cd
   28 vi .bash_profile
   29 exit
   30 history
   31 exit
   32 cygcheck -s -v -r > cygcheck.out
   33 history
   34 history
   35 ls
   36 cd
   37 pwd
   38 ls
   39 history
   40 exit
   41 history
sita 42 $ history
================================

Now I move up one more step an get

================================
....
....
30 history
   31 exit
   32 cygcheck -s -v -r > cygcheck.out
   33 history
   34 history
   35 ls
   36 cd
   37 pwd
   38 ls
   39 history
   40 exit
   41 history
sita 42 $ cygcheck -s -v -r > cygcheck.out
================================

which is just what is expected. One more and we get

================================
   31 exit
   32 cygcheck -s -v -r > cygcheck.out
   33 history
   34 history
   35 ls
   36 cd
   37 pwd
   38 ls
   39 history
   40 exit
   41 history
sita 42 $ cygcheckexit
================================

Command 31 (exit) now has the extra characters
pre-pending the entry on the history list.

Hitting a return here executes the 'exit', though.
This seems to work for other commands. It appears
as though the characters have no effect. But,
they do cause a bit of confusion!

Also I noticed that if I input a really long string for a command, the characters
that should be in a new line over write the leading characters of the command --
that is, there is no line feed when the text wraps around.

Would greatly appreciate any help in fixing this.

The 'cygcheck' output is attached.

If you need any further information about the
mintty set up, please let me know.

tia.

Please test the following:
* Set you prompt to some basic string, e.g. PS1=%. Does that change
anything?
* Mintty 2.7.5 changed the default wraparound behaviour to become
compatible with the xterm default. With setting -o OldWrapModes=true,
does that change anything?
* Can you cross-test this in xterm?
* Does it happen in a freshly-started mintty? If it only happens later,
which programs did you run in the meantime?
* Make a screen log demonstrating a minimal test case, please.

This bug has bothered me for years, I would love to see it fixed. Here is a
simple test case:

    $ cat ~/.bash_history
    echo ABCDEF ABCDEF ABCDEF ABCDEF
    echo 0123456789 0123456789 0123456789 0123456789 0123456789 0123456789

Result:

$ echo ABCDEF ABCDEF ABCDEF ABCDEF 234

What I tried:

1. PS1=%
2. "TERM" with no "am" or "bw"
3. "TERM" with both "am" and "bw"
4. "TERM" with "am" only (couldnt find one with "bw" only)

If you have a custom terminal that this works with - provide the "infocmp"
output and I will try it. Note that I am not using Mintty, I am just using
sh.exe and conhost.exe, so it seems that mintty is not the culprit but perhaps
Cygwin DLL or Readline.

Sorry, I can't duplicate this. I even tried with conhost and bash -il
in the window and just don't see an issue. My TERM value is xterm and
the data comes from the file /usr/share/terminfo/78/xterm.

You comment concerned me - so i just tested this again

this time on a pristine virtual machine - windows 7

same issue - note i am launching via "Cygwin.bat"

thanks

I'm using Win10 and typically the icon created by setup which starts
mintty directly as:

C:\cygwin64\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico -

I started conhost from that session and then executed `bash -il' within
conhost.

So just for grins I went to the Windows Explorer and started with the
cygwin.bat file and performed your test again using the .bash_history
with no issues. This time the TERM=cygwin which comes from
/usr/share/terminfo/63/cygwin.

i said from the beginning that i wasnt using mintty - so im not sure why you
are testing with mintty

also you dont start conhost - its started automatically when you launch any
shell.

all i can say to this is that you arent using windows 7, so perhaps the newer
version of conhost has fixed the issue - at this point we would need another
windows 7 user to confirm the issue - further tests with win 10 wont be helpful.

You should give that a try. You can start with conhost and get a cmd
session.

I agree if there are any.

it appears we have reached the bounds of your knowledge. trying to launch
conhost.exe on its own is a noop. if you double click the EXE, or you call it
from the run box, it will not show up in the task manager. if you ARE seeing it,
its because you have launched one of these:

- cmd.exe
- powershell.exe
- sh.exe

and *it* has called conhost.exe. perhaps you should actually try this before
commenting further.

Greetings, surendar jeyadev!

I can confirm this behavior.
Given the position of cut-off, it appears the problem is in wrong character
width to terminal position count translation.

You put "cygwin terminal" in the mail subject; so you're in fact using a
"cygwin console".

Tested with Window 7 Ultimate, starting cmd.exe, then Cygwin.bat. This
does not reproduce the issue for me.

All the fuzzy test case descriptions in this thread so far were
ASCII-only, so I'm puzzled about your conclusion as I see no
double-width or combining characters involved.

Maybe someone could care to provide a *reproducible test case*.

Here are the steps I used - note again I am testing this on a pristine virtual
machine:

1. Navigate to "C:\cygwin64" using Windows Explorer
http://i.redd.it/nj0agyjgg2h11.png

2. Double click "Cygwin.bat"
http://i.redd.it/tpyn4u9ig2h11.png

3. Close Cygwin
4. Navigate to "C:\cygwin64\home\John"
5. Move ".bash_history" to "C:\cygwin64\home\John"
http://i.redd.it/jyaeiyjjg2h11.png

6. Navigate to "C:\cygwin64"
7. Double click "Cygwin.bat"
8. Arrow up
http://i.redd.it/bb1t4twkg2h11.png

9. Arrow up
http://i.redd.it/nidg3v2og2h11.png

Note I tried this with Cygwin 2.10.0 and 2.11.0.

I was not able to reproduce on Windows 7 x86.

Greetings, Thomas Wolff!

>> I can confirm this behavior.

Exactly as described.
Start Cygwin using cygwin.bat
Enter command
echo ABCDEF ABCDEF ABCDEF ABCDEF
Enter command
echo 6789 123456789 123456789 123456789 123456789 123456789 123456789
Tap twice to pull the first entered command from history.
Observe part of the second command remaining on the screen.

I tried playing with locale and chcp settings to no apparent effect.

Try with Win7 or not "new" Win10 native console.

No for me, again Win10, executing or clicking from File Explorer the
conhost.exe program will open a cmd.exe window.

I couldn't reproduce this, neither with mintty, nor with cygwin.bat
(bash --login -i)
In both cases, the

Windows 7.

$ uname -a
CYGWIN_NT-6.1 assos 2.10.0(0.325/5/3) 2018-02-02 15:16 x86_64 Cygwin

Then I ran Cygwin update, and this happened:
