Hi folks,
we're about to release Cygwin 1.7.12. This is mainly a bugfix release,
but a couple of bigger changes were required under the hood to fix some
of the bugs.
Please test the latest developer snapshot from http://cygwin.com/snapshots/
That's what we think should become 1.7.12.
Please report bugs to the cygwin at cygwin dot com mailing list.
Please follow the guidelines at http://cygwin.com/problems.html
Be aware that we're mainly focusing on regressions from 1.7.11.
What's new:
===========
- Cygwin now automatically populates the /dev directory with all
existing POSIX devices.
- Add virtual /proc/PID/mountinfo file.
- flock now additionaly supports the following scenario, which requires
to propagate locks to the parent process:
(
flock -n 9 || exit 1
# ... commands executed under lock ...
} 9>/var/lock/mylockfile
Only propagation to the direct parent process is supported so far,
not to grand parents or sibling processes.
- Add a "detect_bloda" setting for the CYGWIN environment variable to help
finding potential BLODAs.
Bug fixes:
==========
- Fix a subtil, long-standing bug when reading the CYGWIN environment
variable, which could result in overwriting unrelated memory.
- Fix wrong MB_CUR_MAX setting at process startup.
- Define tcgetsid with correct return type.
- Fix Ctrl-C handling in the console for Cygwin processes.
- Fix a bug in controlling tty handling when duplicating a console
descriptor.
- More fixes to handle DLL loading correctly.
- Fix a problem with a Windows network function misbehaving if the
stack of the current thread is in the high address area. Typically
this only affected 64 bit systems.
- Fix a bug in Cygwin executable recognition which could result in
some applications not started correctly.
- Don't handle 0 bytes reads on pipes as EOF.
- Fix scenarios in which the signal handling between parent and child
process were broken due to a race condition.
- Fix a memory leak in synchronization calls like sleep or
pthread_cond_timedwait.
- Fix definitions of MCAST_INCLUDE and MCAST_EXCLUDE in cygwin/socket.h.
- Simplify system time handling, fix return values of clock_getres and
clock_setres for CLOCK_REALTIME, and fix potential infinite loop due
to overagressive optimization.
- Avoid using a potentially unrelated handle as stdio handle.
- Fix a few potential crashes.

Nothing to report, except that this is the best 1.7 we have ever had.
Thank you.

Hi, when I read this, I wondered whether this bug could be fixed:
http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=513
but it isn't.
I had later found (and reported to cygwin-developers) that the terminal
response to terminal queries (like cursor position request or device
attribute request) is placed in the wrong buffer because there are
different objects (descriptors?) for stdin and stdout, so the response
would stay in Nirvana and never reach the application. (And it used to
work in CYGWIN=tty mode because curiously, in that case, the console
handles would have been shared for stdin and stdout.)
Since you seem to have just looked at this area of the console code,
could you give it check?
Kind regards,
Thomas

I cant't find your later mails on the subject in the cygwin-developers
list archive, but I vaguley remember that this was discussed at one
point and nobody had an idea how to implement it without turning the
code upside down. You're familiar with the fhandler_console code as
well, so maybe you have an idea now how to implement this?

I don't see how we could accommodate this without switching the console
to "uncooked" mode. And, as you say, that would have massive effects
on the console code. I don't think it's worth that much change for such
a relatively unused feature. Especially since it would make console I/O
slower.
That said, I think the bug should be closed WONT_FIX.

Not so familiar, actually, except with some very specific parts now. But
I tried something, see my patch to cygwin-patches and my first comments
there.

I don't see how it should make anything slower. It may not be worth it
after all, but there could be a correlation with select() problems
(input being delayed and not recognized immediately).
> That said, I think the bug should be closed WONT_FIX.
As I indicated on cygwin-patches, it may be worth a check anyway.

Greetings,
Firstly, thank you everyone for your tireless work on
the Cygwin project! I have no doubt that many of you
burn the midnight oil in your quest to improve Cygwin.
I appreciate the fruits of your labor! So, thank you.
Now, in testing the latest snapshots I may have
stumbled upon something that has not yet been noticed.
If by chance it has, then I apologize for not probing
deep enough.
It appears that some sort of anomaly was introduced in
snapshot 20120329 which persists in 20120330 and
20120401 as well.
Snapshot 20120321 is the last snapshot that seems to
work correctly in my testing.
I applied the snapshots to a 1.7.11 installation and
also performed a rebaseall operation (with success)
after applying each snapshot and prior to testing.
The issue affects the ability to launch *some*
applications from the XWin Server's menu (X icon in
systray). For example:
1) Attempts to launch xterm fails to launch and results
in a stack dump. (It is noteworthy to mention that the
initial xterm launched via the "XWin Server" Windows
shortcut does indeed launch).
2) Attempts to launch gvim just fails to launch (I
cannot locate any dump file).
3) Attempt to "View logfile" results in an xterm stack
dump.
4) Attempts to launch an rxvt terminal, as well as an
Xemacs session, succeeds.
However, all of these applications do launch
successfully from the command line for all snapshots
(within the initial xterm or subsequent xterm's
launched from it).
My test platform is a first generation Intel core-i7
running Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit, SP1.
Attached are files detailing the cygcheck results (all
OK) and the stack dumps for xterm. Also, I have
attached a slightly modified /etc/X11/system.XWinrc
which I used as a test case.
Hopefully this is enough info to enable investigation
of these events.
Kind regards,
Ken
