Hi,

I have a Windows machine and I have Cygwin installed. I have a Perl script
which calls a shell script using Cygwin. I am getting the following message
while running the Perl script:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5 [main] sh 6632 c:\cygwin\bin\sh.exe: *** fatal error - couldn't allocate

c:\myscript.sh: fork: Resource temporarily unavailable
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I searched various links, and tried out different suggestions that worked
for others but to no avail. Few things that I tried was:
--------------------------------------------------
1.	Disabled SEP (Symantec Endpoint Protection)
2.	Turned off DEP (Data Execution Prevention) for Cygwin’s sh.exe
3.	Modified numbers (xxxx, yyyy, zzzz) present in Windows key value at the
following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\SubSystems\
4.	Ran rebaseall in ash.exe
--------------------------------------------------

The strange thing is that if I directly call the shell script using Cygwin,
it works fine.
c:\cygwin\bin\sh.exe c:\myscript.sh

cygcheck -V gave the following output:
--------------------------------------------------
$ cygcheck  -V
cygcheck version 1.123
System Checker for Cygwin
Copyright (C) 1998 - 2008 Red Hat, Inc.
Compiled on Apr 12 2010
--------------------------------------------------

I think this version of Cygwin is quite old so I am planning to install a
separate instance (latest) but what concerns me is that since the shell
script works fine without using Perl, and fails when using Perl, there seems
to be some issue either with
----------------------------------
1. Perl itself
2. compatibility between Perl & Cygwin versions
----------------------------------

I have also attached the output of ‘cygcheck -s -v –r’. However, I have
modified/removed few sensitive info.

Can anyone provide some help to get this thing working?

Thanks,
Gaurav

Thanks for your reply Reini!

I got hold of perlrebase from here:
http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2010-02/txt00017.txt

Not sure whether this is the latest one.

I have Perl separately installed at c:\Perl. I am not sure how to run this.
I just copied the prelrebase script and kept it in the Cygwin's bin
directory. Then I had to set the 'perl' variable in prelrebase script to
'perl=../../Perl/bin/perl$suff.exe' because my Cygwin is at c:\Cygwin. Now
when I ran the script with argument '5.6.1', I get the following error:
--------------------------------------------------
user@machine: /cygdrive/c/cygwin/bin
$ ./perlrebase.sh 5.6.1
no archlib found for ../../Perl/bin/perl5.6.1.exe
--------------------------------------------------

I am not sure what this archlib is? I could not find it defined anywhere in
the perlrebase script. Can you please help me with this?

Gaurav

The latest one is from perl-5.10.1-5

This will not work.
perlrebase works only for cygwin perls, not for strawberry or activestate perls.

Do you really want to rebase your activestate perl 5.6.1?

I told you to run perlrebase, not perlrebase 5.6.1

See perl -V:archlib

My 5.6.1 *cygwin* perl has:
$ perl5.6.1 -V:archlib
archlib='/usr/lib/perl5/5.6.1/cygwin-debug';

My ActiveState perl has
> perl -V:archlib
archlib='C:\Perl\lib';

But this should not be rebased by cygwin as it has a different fork
strategy than cygwin.

That's what I was thinking. I was sure that I am doing something wrong, and
it must have something to do with Perl for Cygwin :) Thanks for the info!

As you have said below that my Perl will have a different forking mechanism,
I will/should not go for perlrebase.

Thanks!

So now the question is what should I do to resolve the issue I am facing?
Since we use a separate Perl (Active State), your perlrbase will not work. I
am stuck. :( Any suggestions?

Gaurav

How about contacting ActiveState, the makers of the Perl you are using?

Either that or ditch the ActiveState and use Cygwin's Perl.

Hi,

As suggested, i tried asking ActiveState guys but that didn't work. :(

So i planned to ditch the ActiveState Perl :) and go with Cygwin's Perl.
Again encountered a similar error as present in my first post so i thought
of using 'perlrebase' as suggested by Reini. Still i am getting the same
error message. :(

Any suggestions?

The perlrebase log looks good, but the other log indicates that you
need to do a rebaseall.

Hi Reini,

Thanks for your reply!

I tried running rebaseall. I faced few issues because of some DLLs. After
some Google, I found out that the issue was because the DLLs were
read-only. Assigning proper permissions to those DLLs made it work. However,
the problem is that the fork issue still exists.

I have attached the log files for reference.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Gaurav
