I'm unable to install and run cygwin 1.3.18-1 unless I'm logged in as
'administrator'. If I try to run cygwin logged in as another user, I get the
console window, but it appears to hang. I've tried both a clean 'default'
installation and a clean 'all' installation. I'm running Win2k. My previous
installation of cygwin was running fine.

I also notice a number of 'weird' messages that flash during the 'post-install'
phase.

I've searched groups.google and the cygwin mailing lists without finding any
references to this type of problem. Has anyone seen this type of behavior? I'm
at a lost as to what to try next...

Bill,

Any user that belongs to group Administrators will do.

No 'setup.log' or 'setup.log.full' files in the directory with 'setup.exe'?
What part of creating the 'cygcheck' information caused you problems?

Completely agree about Vista, it's ruined my life, but are you sure you
waited long enough for gnuplot.sh to complete? For no clear reason that
I can discern, it takes ages on both the machines I use regularly, one
of which is in all other contexts really fast.

Ok I sent a log of my setup, I was unable to "cygcheck -s -r -v" and
*attach* the output.

Did you "Run as" administator when running 'setup.exe'? Can you run
"cygcheck -s -r -v" and *attach* the output to your reply? How about
your 'setup.log*' files?

There is no qnulot.sh file according to
<http://cygwin.com/cgi-bin2/package-grep.cgi?grep=qnulot.sh> so something
is getting messed up here. Perhaps removing what you've installed so far
and re-running 'setup.exe' as administrator ("Run as") but just installing
the default packages first would get you going.

Hello, I've tried several times to install Cygwin on my new desktop,
running shitty Windows Vista Home Premium. Anyways I've tried
installing it several times using different mirrors each time and I
get the same problem in every install.
It stops at

Running...

No Package

/etc/postinstall/qnulot.sh

It just freezes there and does nothing...

Yes, the CD is pretty screwed up. Too bad. I'm sure I tested things against
a local dir on my end but apparently something happened along the way to
burning the CD.

Jim replied to me privately that he had no problems installing from
www.cygwin.com so that does seem to indicate there is a problem with the
GNU CD. Just FYI.

Although I contributed the cygwin stuff to the GNU CD, I never got a
chance to actually test it. Apparently something is screwed up badly.
Possibly, using a newer version of setup.exe than the one on the CD may
work.

I've asked the FSF to send me a CD so I can see what's up.

Yes. Ask the provider of the "GNU cd" for help or go to www.cygwin.com and
click on "Install Now".

I have attempted several installs to a Win2k system of the cygwin-ports
using setup.exe on the GNU cd. I keep getting an unexpected end of file
error on ex.exe and then wget.mo And then I am thrown out. It says it
creates a log but I am unable to find it.

Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Quoted from the BASH man page:

       -z string
True if the length of string is zero.

This means that you have your HOME environment variable already
set.

I just installed cygwin today (after a long while of not having it
installed...) and when I started up bash I discovered that $HOME wasn't
being set correctly! After looking through the faq, I thought this might be
related to me having a windows login name with a space in it, so I edited
/etc/profile to explicitly set my username to james. This didn't work.
After doing a bit of testing, I discovered that the following structure:

    if [ -z "$HOME" ]; then
        HOME="/home/$USER"
    fi

was failing to set the HOME variable correctly. I was able to fix this by
removing the if/fi statements and just arbitrarily setting the HOME
variable. Am I going to have other problems doing this? Also, is there a
known reason that the HOME variable wasn't being set correctly in the first
place (it was just being set to $USER.)?

My operating system is Windows ME, if that's any help...

Not seeing any other responses, I'll mention the following:

cygwinb19.dll came with cygwin-b19. In many cases, programs which attempt to
link it will be satisfied with a renamed copy of or link to cygwin1.dll from
more recent versions. It would be possible also to install both cygwin1.dll
and cygwinb19.dll in the main cygnus /bin directory. Most programs which
look for cygwin1.dll will be wanting at least the standard b20.1 version.

I'm sure this doesn't answer all the questions.

Yes, you're mixing up binaries for Cygwin B19, which require
cygwinb19.dll, and binaries for Cygwin B20(.x), which are looking for
cygwin1.dll!
You should only use Cygwin B20 binaries and also cygwin1.dll, because
B19 is quite outdated.
If don't have this dll, you have to download and install usertools.exe
from Cygnus or one of the mirrors. Besides the dll you get a bunch of
GNU utilities, which are very useful.

Bye.
Michael.

I am running Win 3.1 on a 486. The install seems to run because I get
the window and the icons, but when I execute GUNZIP, the screen goes
black for a second then comes right back (the same happens when I do the
WINZIP install). What am I missing to do an install so I have a
compiler? Have gone through the README and FAQ files a number of times
to no avail.
