Hi

I can't close Cygwin windows. When I click on the X at the upper-right hand corner of the window, it just hangs. When I click on the X again, the title bar displays, "(Not Responding)". Prior to attempting to close the window, everything works fine. I did use the 64-bit version for installation - setup-x86_64.exe.

Thanks.

I mean the Cygwin command-window terminal, invoked by this shortcut:

C:\cygwin64\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico -

Thanks

Does it happen if you try to close the terminal immediately after starting?
Did you run any specific applications for it to happen?
Any alterations to shell startup scripts?

Greetings.

Does it happen if you try to close the terminal immediately after starting?

Yes, as well as any time after that.

Did you run any specific applications for it to happen?

No. Even if I just open the window, and then attempt to close it, it does this.

Any alterations to shell startup scripts?

In .bashrc, I have at the end, after all the commented out stuff:
set -o vi
set tabcomplete
alias path="echo $PATH | perl -pe 's/:/\n/g'"
alias cdpath="echo $CDPATH | perl -pe 's/:/\n/g'"
export FIGNORE=.o:.java~:.class:.bak
alias wpwd='cygpath --windows `pwd`'

if [ -z "$RANPROFILE" ]; then
  PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:$PATH"
Fi

That's about all I've done to it.

Thanks,
Lyle

Then I don't see much of the cause for such a behavior from Cygwin side.
May be other software interfering. Do you have a particularly zealous
"antivirus", pehaps?

We're using "Symantec Endpoint Protection", Version 14.

I could see an anti-virus program preventing the execution of a Cygwin window, but not the closing of one.

If you wait for a few minutes is the result different? If you have a
different experience based on time expended then the likelihood of an
interfering AV program is greater.

I have seen Symantec in the past creating such problems.
Probably they inject something in the call sequence.

Which brings me to this suggestions: Please try option
ConfirmExit=false, does the behaviour change?

Despite pending response to my diagnostic request, it can well be that
the start of `ps` to construct the process list shown with the exit
confirmation has this effect. I've uploaded a patch to avoid it,
constructing the list internally from /proc, to the mintty repository.

I have the same issue as Lyle. Actually, my Cygwin/mintty window eventually
closes, but it is after a minute or two, during which time it says it is
"(Not Responding)."

I tried Thomas Wolff's step of adding ConfirmExit=false to .minttyrc, but it
did not help.

Interestingly, my computer also runs Symantec Endpoint Protection. I seem
to be able to disable it and, when I do so, the problem with mintty
persists.

I have made no alterations to the shell startup scripts.

Most AV packages qualify as:

	https://www.cygwin.com/acronyms/#BLODA

	https://cygwin.com/faq/#faq.using.bloda

and most issues disappear after uninstalling and restarting the system, or
having them ignore everything under the Cygwin root install directory.
