setup-x86.exe v2.893 has stopped working

When running "Install from local directory," Crash box says: A problem
caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the
program and notify you if a solution is available.

the /var/log/setup.log.full could provide some hint.

In general for W7 64bit is better to install the 64bit version
of cygwin.

32 bit has been working on this 64 bit machine for the last several
years.  This is the setup program, why is it suddenly having problems?
 Didn't see anything out of the ordinary in setup.log, setup.log.full,
or in the "cygcheck -s -r -v" output.  What debugging info is
available for the setup program itself beyond setup.log* ?

What about BLODA updates?  It seems that maybe other software may be
getting in the way.

There may be a bug in the program that happened to be triggered by what you were 
doing.

Do you know how to use gdb?  If so, I could make a debugging version of setup

I've downloaded setup-2.893.x86.dbg referenced above.  I haven't used
gdb in a while but I am confident I can use it.  I''ve read the page
referenced at sourceware.org/git.

I'm willing to build a setup-x86.exe to work with setup-2.893.x86.dbg
if you can point me to the instructions for downloading the source and
building it inside Cygwin.

setup-x86.exe exits very shortly after starting to process the
setup.ini file it seems.  Probably a simple fix with whatever debug
output I can generate.

2.893-3-ge084ed (32 bit)) in the splash screen.

setup.exe aborts at approximately the same point, while parsing
setup.ini.  When it aborts I see a windows dialog box offering to send
Microsoft more info about the problem, which I denied.

To proceed, I need a bit of help in the basics of gdb to continue
troubleshooting.

If you've build setup.exe from source using the default make target 
(i.e. 'make' rather than 'make strip' or 'make upx'), then the built 
executable is unstripped and contains symbols (so you don't need the 
.dbg file; which corresponds to a different build in any case...)

Something like the following should work:

gdb setup.exe
run
[reproduce crash]
bt full

The whole point of preserving the symbols is that you don't need to 
rebuild setup in order to debug it.

Something like the following should work:

upx -d setup-x86.exe
gdb setup-x86.exe
symbol-file setup-2.893.x86.dbg
run
[reproduce crash]
bt full

Can you tell me if you have the 'WindowMaker' package installed, and if 
so, what version ('cygcheck -cd | grep WindowMaker')?

I've built a setup with a patch which attempts to address this.

Perhaps you could try that and see if it improves things for you?

Hmm... the only way I can see this crash happening is if your installed 
WindowMaker was so old we couldn't determine the package filename, so 
something else I don't understand is going on here.

But this is good.  Thanks for testing.  This fix will be in the next 
setup release.
