your mount table looks strange

C: / system binary,auto
c:\bin /bin system text,cygexec
c:/bin /usr/bin system text,cygexec
C:\lib /usr/lib system binary,auto
c:\usr\local\bin /usr/local/bin system text,cygexec
cygdrive prefix /drv system binary,auto

It is not recommended to use c:\ as root.
Why half are mounted as text instead of binary ?

Regards
Marco

Not at all. I just installed the stock clisp package and tried to run it.

I know. I'm doing it anyway. Using c:\ as root makes Windows and
Cygwin paths very similar. I don't think the difference is material here.

I think that's a cygcheck bug.

$ cat /proc/mounts
C:/users/dancol/appdata/local/temp /tmp ntfs binary,posix=0,user 1 1
C:/usr/local/bin /usr/local/bin ntfs binary,cygexec 1 1
C:/bin /usr/bin ntfs binary,cygexec 1 1
C:/bin /bin ntfs binary,cygexec 1 1
C:/lib /usr/lib ntfs binary,auto 1 1
C: / ntfs binary,auto 1 1

Looks like a missing dependency or wrong dll perm. I saw none in your cygcheck.

Can you try
$ ldd /usr/lib/clisp-2.48/base/lisp.exe
and see of one dll is missing.
And check if one of the dll's has no x perm set.

clisp.exe is just a driver, which exec's base/lisp.exe or full/lisp.exe

It was a suggestion, not a question.

What about `mount` output and contents of your /etc/fstab ?

$ cygcheck /usr/lib/clisp-2.48/base/lisp.exe

should be better. ldd does not advise about missing dll's

That "??? => ??? (0x1490000)" line is worrisome. I fired up a
PROC_THREAD+LOADER ETW trace --- c:\windows\sysow64\kernel32.dll is
loaded at that address and unloaded again before ldd gets around to
calling GetModuleFileNameEx on it. Is that supposed to happen?

I don't think it's a DLL issue, though. clisp _does_ start and print out
its banner, so the OS loader has to get as far as running the program's
entry point. clisp seems to be crashing when loading its saved memory image.

I'd suggest removing default mounts from fstab.
Just in case, and not relevant to any observed issues.

No idea. 0x1490000 would be too low anyway, even for kernel32.dll.
Maybe it's just a temporary cygwin artefact.

Hmm, if you haven't changed or corrupted the image it should also not happen.
There is some dll rebase fixup happening when loading the image, this aera
is stable for years.
You could try to reinstall clisp.

What concerns me is:
1. I cannot repro it and never heard of it before.
2. ldd reports wow64, cygcheck only 32bit dlls.
You could try ldd the base/lisp.exe not the full. full has much
more dll deps
and is not used when starting base with clisp. clisp -k full would use full.
3. I do not have all those .net dlls in my process. Maybe we need a manifest?

I don't think it's a Cygwin artifact --- after all, ETW _does_ show
that we load and unload a DLL at that location. I can provide the
trace if it'd help. The mystery entry in ldd shows up for _any_
program that links against cygwin1.dll and for cygwin1.dll itself, but
not for other 32-bit programs like \windows\syswow64\notepad.exe

I've done that a few times now. I've also tried to compile the most
recent clisp release from source, and it failed similarly.

Come to think of it, I've only seen this problem since upgrading the
cygwin package. Previously, I was able to at least _start_ clisp.

> 2. ldd reports wow64, cygcheck only 32bit dlls.

That's expected. Cygcheck walks the import table, while ldd runs the
program as a debugee prints the DLLs it actually loads. When running
on a wow64 system, Windows transparently converts references to 32-bit
DLLs to their wow64 equivalents.

What .NET DLLs? Do you mean the APIset stuff? That's new in Windows 7

Where did you rebase them to? You know that on WOW64 and with the
bigaddr flag on, the application heap is located at 0x80000000 by
default, right? Perhaps some of your DLLs just collide with that?

I'm using a starting base address of 0xC8000000; I haven't had
problems with any other program.

It turns out that clisp uses bit 31 of each pointer for its gc mark
bit. No wonder the thing blows in bigaddr-aware mode. clisp _does_
work, however, when compiled with -DWIDE. In this mode, clisp uses two
words for each lisp value --- one for the pointer and one for the
metadata. Also, clisp has a LINUX_NOEXEC_HEAPCODES mode that also
works, and without bloating memory use, but that requires that no real
virtual address be in the range [0xC0000000, 0xDFFFFFFF].

Ouch.

That can't be guaranteed. WOW64 provides the full 32 bit VM address
space.

Hmm, I do not really want to maintain lisp32.exe and lisp64.exe
variants, but maybe
upstream can be persuaded to make that distinction in the clisp.exe driver.
It's only for huge data and bad rebase addresses.
And for huge data a self-compiled clisp makes sense to me.
Serious lisp users use better lisp compilers anyway which compile
to native code. (sbcl, lispworks, allegro).
clisp's main strength is fast startup and fast IO.

Maybe also a documentation issue for rebaseing.

That has nothing to do with rebasing. If you build clisp with a recent
gcc, it will have the "bigaddr" flag set in the file header since
Cygwin's gcc sets that by default. While DLLs should be rebased from
0x70000000 downwards as usual, the applications heap, as well as
thread stacks, as well as shared memory regions created with mmap(2)
or shmat(2) will be in the high memory area starting at 0x80000000.

THe bottom line is, if the distro clisp isn't 32 bit clean, which it
apparently isn't using default settings, it should either be rebuilt
with -DWIDE, or it should have the bigaddr flag removed from the
file header by default (peflags -l0).

Thanks. This deserves an update now.

Indeed. One caveat is that WIDE seems to be incompatible with clisp
threading. It'd probably be a good idea to send an email upstream and
ask the clisp people whether there's anything they can do. You'll also
need the attached patch, which fixes some macro-name conflicts that
arise when compiling with WIDE.

I'd code up something like LINUX_NOEXEC_HEAPCODES myself, but I'm
nervous about making those changes: lots of places in the code (like
the bytecode interpreter?!) look at LINUX_NOEXEC_HEAPCODES and do
subtly different things if it'd set. In principle, I don't see why we
should have to reserve [0xC0000000, 0xDFFFFFFF]: the bits that force
us out of this range could come from the low bits of the pointer
instead, and the cost would just be a coarser alignment requirement.
I'm happier with requiring coarser alignment than I am with carving
out a portion of the address space.
