This probably dates back to this commit: <http://www.sqlite.org/src/info/ec27ab0eb3a1ee08> SQLite links with the linenoise library by default now instead of libreadline. Is there any functionality in libreadline which is not in linenoise? If so, that would be reason to deviate from the default build options. I doubt the added size is much of a big deal with something as large as sqlite is already. The linenoise project itself suggests using readline if it's available and linenoise if readline is not.
