Ouch! Thanks for the hint.
Alas, the only selection I can find is {Default, MIME, UUEncode,
BINHEX}.
I'm trying it as .txt this time using "Default". Is that better?
Otherwise I'll look for a different mail client for this list.

Still here:
----
~$ echo blub > //desdata2/universal/Sourcecode/test.txt
~$ cp -f //desdata2/universal/Sourcecode/test.txt /f/tmp
~$ mv //desdata2/universal/Sourcecode/test.txt

cp: skipping file `//desdata2/universal/Sourcecode/test.exe', as it was
replaced while being copied

Does this help? See attachment.
----
~$ strace cp -f //desdata2/universal/Sourcecode/test.exe /f/tmp >&
/f/tmp/cp-strace.txt

Hm, I know it's a Network Appliance filer, and I guess they have
their own file system (but could dig deeper, if you like). Anyway,
I'm using it as a "mapped network drive" so I'm guessing SMB (where
else can I look?), while the Windows explorer "Properties" dialog calls
it "NTFS". Oh, in case this makes a difference: "/f" is a local NTFS
partition.
HTH,

Your strace shows that the inode number of the file changes in two
subsequent calls to stat. This is unfortunate, to say the least.
Can you give us more information about the remote file system? Is
that Clear Case or something like that? Could you please build and
run the below test application like this:
$ gcc -o getvolinfo getvolinfo.c
$ ./getvolinfo //desdata2/universal
and send the output to this list?
Thanks,
Corinna

Hi!
I have the same problem with cp, mv and rm -rf, but only on my windows share,
not on C:.
The result of running your test program on my "home directory" /cygdrive/z is:
$ ./getvolinfo.exe /cygdrive/z
rootdir: z:\
Volume Name : <userdata>
Serial Number : 2283740008
Max Filenamelength : 255
Filesystemname : <NTFS>
Flags:
FILE_CASE_SENSITIVE_SEARCH : TRUE
FILE_CASE_PRESERVED_NAMES : TRUE
FILE_UNICODE_ON_DISK : TRUE
FILE_PERSISTENT_ACLS : TRUE
FILE_FILE_COMPRESSION : TRUE
FILE_VOLUME_QUOTAS : FALSE
FILE_SUPPORTS_SPARSE_FILES : FALSE
FILE_SUPPORTS_REPARSE_POINTS: FALSE
FILE_SUPPORTS_REMOTE_STORAGE: FALSE
FILE_VOLUME_IS_COMPRESSED : FALSE
FILE_SUPPORTS_OBJECT_IDS : FALSE
FILE_SUPPORTS_ENCRYPTION : FALSE
FILE_NAMED_STREAMS : FALSE
FILE_READ_ONLY_VOLUME : FALSE
Hope this helps.
On a related note:
<begin-wish-mode>
It would be very nice if it was very simple to install an old version
of cygwin, so that one can revert to an old version that is known to work.
<end-wish-mode>
Other than this kind of problems, I find cygwin totally neccessary to boost my
productivity. Keep up the good work!

Thanks. May I assume that the remote directory is on a NT4 based NTFS?

Corinna,
thanks for the code! Sorry for the delay (had to do some work for my
employer in the meantime ;-)

Here's the output:

Thanks. You didn't reply to my other question, though. What filesystem
exactly is on the remote side? I'm not familar with the above combination
of values. This doesn't look like any native NTFS system, nor does it
look like a Samba share, AFAICS.

Corinna,
to be honest, I haven't the faintest. This is a NetApp filer which
is controlled by our IT staff. I will ask them, but I don't really
expect any more concrete information than what you get when you
google for "cifs site:netapp.com" (hints I gathered from within our
intranet - cifs=common internet file system, looks like another M$
invention), of which I just can't make any sense apart from this:
The OS is called "Data ONTAP", and it is capable of exporting volumes
as NFS and CIFS at the same time. CIFS volumes can then get NetBIOS
aliases, which seems to be what I see from my client. The documentation
mentions that the volumes on the filer are initially of type "FlexVol",
which seems to be an invention of NetApp.
This is probably not enough to understand what's happening here,
particularly if you haven't got a NetApp filer around for testing.
In that case I'm inclined to give up for now and apologize for the
noise,
because I can live without cp'ing exes from the share.
Just to sum up the observations:
- The problem seems to depend on file extensions to some extent,
as it applies to files with extension ".exe", but not with ".txt".
- It appears in cp, but not in Windoze explorer.
- It appears when cp'ing *from* the share.
- It appears with cygwin dll 1.5.19, but not with 1.5.18.
If you have more test code that I can compile and run on my machine,
I'm happy to do so, but I can very well understand if you don't care
about people who don't even know what file system they are running ;-)
Cheers,
Jan.

No, I think that's enough for now. As suggested by somebody on this
list some weeks ago, I will change the condition on which I use the real
inode number instead of faking the inode number using a hash value
depending on the FILE_SUPPORTS_OBJECT_IDS flag, except for Samba file
systems. This should lower the chance to get unreliable inode numbers.
Otherwise, I'm always glad to get the file system flags returned by
other remote file systems, to raise the chance to get reliable inode
numbers.

I'm running a cygwin install from yesterday (lib 1.5.20) and running
into this issue. The remote filesyste is a Samba share (2.2.8a), part
of which is local to that box and other parts of which are in turn NFS
mounted from NetApps and various other things. I don't have much/any
control of this environment...
Even if I could get the Samba upgraded to a newer one that reported the
correct file IDs, I don't know that it would help since sometimes it
would be reporting the information from NetApp, which I understand can
also be wrong? Further even if Cygwin has logic to deal with the NetApp
it won't help in this case because it won't realize that's what it's
ultimately talking to...
Perhaps the best thing to do is add a registry key/env var/some other
kind of override that users can set, to prevent cygwin from trying to be
intelligent here and just use the old hashing method always for Samba
(which worked fine for me in this exact setup with older Cygwin)
It's nice when software can guess what the right thing is, but it's always
good to have an override knob in case the guess is wrong :-)
Thanks

Sorry, but I still think it's possible to get it right in Cygwin w/o
such a knob. What about helping to debug why that happens instead
and get a knob-free solution?

In the current release of cygwin, I'm still having the problem where
I can't use cp with a network appliance drive.
Below is an illustration of my problem, along with the
information requested in
http://sourceware.org/ml/cygwin/2006-01/msg00818.html
$ mkdir /tmp/target
$ cp *.html /tmp/target/.
cp: skipping file `file1.html', as it was replaced while being copied
cp: skipping file `file2.html', as it was replaced while being copied
cp: skipping file `file3.html', as it was replaced while being copied
$ ~/src/getvolinfo .
rootdir: \\filervocb\it\
Volume Name : <it>
Serial Number : 721521953
Max Filenamelength : 255
Filesystemname : <NTFS>
Flags:
FILE_CASE_SENSITIVE_SEARCH : TRUE
FILE_CASE_PRESERVED_NAMES : TRUE
FILE_UNICODE_ON_DISK : TRUE
FILE_PERSISTENT_ACLS : TRUE
FILE_FILE_COMPRESSION : FALSE
FILE_VOLUME_QUOTAS : FALSE
FILE_SUPPORTS_SPARSE_FILES : FALSE

FILE_VOLUME_IS_COMPRESSED : FALSE
FILE_SUPPORTS_OBJECT_IDS : FALSE
FILE_SUPPORTS_ENCRYPTION : FALSE
FILE_NAMED_STREAMS : TRUE
FILE_READ_ONLY_VOLUME : FALSE
Is there some way (perhaps an environmental variable) to shut off this
feature? I've never benefited from it, and it causes me quite a bit of
pain.
[p.s. please include me in relevant CCs -- I'm not subscribed.]
Thanks,

I am not an administrator of the systems running the network
drives that have this problem (the one I documented is just the
one where I most recently encountered this problem) and I do not know.

I tried to update my system this week, using cygwin.com/setup.exe,
and no packages were updated.

OK, this shows that you do have cygwin 1.5.21 (the latest version) installed
but you are still running 1.5.19. My guess is that you were still running
a Cygwin process when you did the upgrade and you forgot to reboot afterwards.
Try that and see if it helps. If not, you have some rouge software somewhere
on your system that is keeping 1.5.19 for you in c:\cygwin\bin\cygwin1.dll.
Find it and kill it dead.
