I just want to find out if anyone has built the tools (gcc, gdb, etc.)
under Windows 95/98 successfully. This used to fail, but that was several
iterations of cygwin ago.
I have heard people say that they've done it, in which case I'd be
interested to check whether it was straightforward? (or as straightforward
as building for NT anyway :-)).

Hi,
I successfully built binutils 2.10, gcc 2.95.2 and insight 5.0 under Win98
about a week ago (target arm-elf). I went through unspeakable horror
beforehand, though. I think the Great Old Ones disapprove of this toolchain.
I think there is some random condition involved in the build process, at
least for gcc (I never had problems building binutils or insight). Under
both Windows 2000 and Win98, I had tried the build op several times and it
worked once, failed other times.

Hello
I have build the GNU tools under Windows98 successfully (target m68k-elf).
I used the PowerPC documentation from the ecos homepage and replaced target
setting "powerpc-eabi" by "m68k-elf" -> the process was straightforward.
The only problem was during installation of cygwin (use textmode mounts
instead of binary mounts).
Now I'm using Windows2000. I rebuild the tools another time without
problems.
The reason for the switch from Windows98 to Windows2000 was the eCos
Configuration Tool (it was not possible to save a modified configuration).
Best regards, Joerg
