Whoops, thanks.

Also I just noticed that GCC 12.2 does better (but not perfect) with 

#define min(x, y) ((x) < (y) ? (x) : (y))
#define max(x, y) ((x) > (y) ? (x) : (y))

instead of the inline functions.  Doesn't seem to help GCC trunk though.
