--- Comment #5 from Marc Glisse <glisse at gcc dot gnu.org> 2013-01-10 13:08:43 UTC ---
This has caused quite a bit of confusion lately with people installing ISL
instead of PPL for gcc-4.7.

--- Comment #6 from Manuel López-Ibáñez <manu at gcc dot gnu.org> 2013-01-10 13:54:22 UTC ---
Perhaps you could add an entry to the FAQ: http://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/FAQ so when
people google for the error, they understand what the problem is. The FAQ
should also mention this bug. Because it is possible that this issue won't be
fixed in the next few years.

--- Comment #8 from Gerald Pfeifer <gerald at pfeifer dot com> ---
I dislike it when it appears to reports of mine, still allow me to close
this as WONTFIX since it's very unlikely to ever be addressed if it hasn't
for 13 years (and it's more of an enhancement, not a critical issue).

If anyone wants to give it a go, embedding invocations of
  gcc/doc/install.texi2html
into
  maintainer-scripts/update_web_docs_git
probably is the way to go.

--- Comment #9 from Thomas Schwinge <tschwinge at gcc dot gnu.org> ---
I will just mention that this also greatly confused me earlier today, when for
"current development", on <https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/#current> we readily
point to "User-Level Documentation", "GCC Installation Instructions":
<https://gcc.gnu.org/install/>, but there is nothing comparable for GCC release
branches, and also these "Installing GCC" pages are not included in any of the
manuals listed for GCC release branches, as listed on
<https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/>. Of course, I do know where to find the
versioned installation instructions in the sources, but I wanted a quick URL to
give to someone -- like we have for all the other manuals.

------- Comment #4 from manu at gcc dot gnu dot org 2007-09-17 17:56 -------
I think this is confirmed as a feature that would be nice to have. So the
install instructions should behave like the OpenMP manual here
http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/ and we will end up with:

http://gcc.gnu.org/install/ for the current development version and
http://gcc.gnu.org/install/gcc-4.2.0/ for GCC 4.2.0 as released.

I guess this will require to adjust a few shell scripts and perhaps adjust a
few webpages. Contributors are welcome.

------- Comment #3 from ammonton at cc dot helsinki dot fi 2007-07-31 16:25 -------
I checked the last few release tarballs, and neither the 4.2.0 or 4.2.1
packages come with pregenerated installation instructions. The older releases I
checked (back to 4.0.1) had the instructions in the INSTALL directory.

------- Comment #2 from ammonton at cc dot helsinki dot fi 2007-07-29 17:53 -------
The INSTALL directory only has a README saying the instructions are generated
from gcc/doc/install.texi and the install.texi2html script in that directory
complains about a missing file gcc-vers.texi which I gather is generated when
building the compiler.

If you need instructions on how to install the installation instructions
something is wrong, IMO.

This one purpose, you should have looked into the install directory which has
an index.html already in the tar file you downloaded.
